Hi

i bought the Lumin A1 a year ago
never use it.

yesterday i wanted to install it , but found out i lost the power cable from the PSU to the Lumin
send email to Lumin ask if i can buy the cable from them , they didn't replay back yet.

i have Synology (not remember what model) with WD Red 2TB x 2
i have AT&T modem with build in router in the second floor
i can't run a cable to first floor (to my system)
in general , why people using NAS compare to Aurender for example with build in Hard drive? (NAS more complicated and need to run network cable)

i have Vitus SM-101 amps , with Pass Labs XP-10
i can't found Vitus Pre to buy.
can i plug the Lumin directly to the amps?
i'm asking because the XP-10 not in the same level of quality compare to the amps and the speakers.

i can use Tidal App using my iPad with the Lumin?

how i can edit the files on the NAS ? each time i want to add a song/album , or delete music i don't want.

i saw new model , Lumin L1
is it different then Synology NAS?

thank you very much as always !

The Lumin L1 is basically a single purpose NAS. It makes setting up the UPNP server very easy. Using the L1, all you do is copy files to it and it automatically sets it up to be used by your Lumin A1.

You can definitely run the Lumin straight into the amps. There is a volume control in the APP. No clue if it would sound better with or without your preamp.

Hope this helps

If network cable cannot be used, consider trying WiFi to Ethernet adapter, WiFi router that supports client mode, or powerline network adapter.

You may connect a Lumin directly to the power amp - turn off Digital Audio Output (for better volume control quality). Then compare the result of having XP-10 in the system or using the direct connection with Lumin volume control.

You may use Lumin app which provides native support for Tidal - this is the preferred option. An alternative is to use Tidal app then AirPlay to Lumin.

To install a music server to Synology please disable its built-in music service then use this one:
http://minimserver.com/install-synology.html

You can invoke MinimServer rescan after the music files are changed.

If you think it's inconvenient to use NAS you may consider using Lumin L1, which behave as a 2TB USB 3.0 HDD such that you can simply copy music files to it. Unplug the USB then it shows up in the same way as NAS music service, with no configuration required.

Honk Kong reply to my email , they will send me the cable for $100

the Synology model is DS214+

"consider trying WiFi to Ethernet adapter, WiFi router that supports client mode, or powerline network adapter."
what option is better?

the AT&T model:
http://www.dslreports.com/r0/downlo...27/NVG599 Triple Play Residential Gateway.pdf

other then easier one time setup compare to NAS , the L1 offer more advantage?
on Lumin website they wrote: "it can also unlock additional browsing features." - not sure what they mean.

to plug external hard drive to the Lumin vs using NAS
i'm not sure what is the advantage to use NAS ?(i guess most of the users using the Lumin with NAS)

With sufficient technical knowledge in WiFi router choice, configuration and placement, I think WiFi router(s) present technically the best solution. Use of powerline adapters should be seen as a last resort for audiophile purposes.

In addition to convenience, another advantage of L1 is to reduce the time required for the app to scan the music library in some scenarios, i.e. one may be able to listen to new albums added to the music library faster.

Some people also find that the audio quality from NAS via network cable is slightly better than from USB attached HDD.

i guess many users are like me , the router far from the system.

i just not sure what i need to buy , there is Range Extender or Access Point or both in one device
many brands and models
N or AC speed
i think also Airport Extreme can use as Access point (i'm not sure)

I recommend you purchase from somewhere that allows you to return it if it does not work out (due to range or compatibility reasons or firmware issues). I looked at your AT&T VDSL router pdf. Its spec says it provides 3x3 802.11ac.

Therefore, matching products include Asus RT-AC68P, Netgear R7000 (router) or EX7000 (extender). Asus has nicer GUI.

If you decide to try an Asus, set it up as a wireless repeater, i.e. go into Wireless - WDS - Wireless - Bridge menu, and set AP mode to "Hybrid".

If you decide to try R7000, read
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/d...e-my-nighthawk-router-as-a-wireless-repeater?

You may try wireless repeater on 5GHz first. If on 5GHz it is not stable, try 2.4GHz instead. It needs to be strategically placed at a location such that it can receive good WiFi signal from your AT&T VDSL router on a different floor, while allowing you to run a cable from it to the Lumin.

i order D-link before i saw your reply

http://us.dlink.com/products/access...less-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-range-extender/

media bridge and access point modes
do you think it's ok?
i need to connect the NAS to the D-link or to my AT&T router?

Its "range extender" mode looks like what I think you need. Personally I don't believe internal antennas are good, but that's just me.

If your NAS primarily serves the Lumin and is only occasionally used for other things, connect it to the D-Link (which the Lumin will be connected to).

If your NAS needs to be accessed via the internet, and/or is used a lot for other PC purposes, leave it connected it to the AT&T router.

thank you very much for your help
i forgot i have this model in the Garage:

better then the D-Link?

EX7000 is a 700mW AC1900 extender with 3x3 external antenna, USB 3.0 port, and uses a Broadcom dual-core 1GHz processor.
DAP-1650 is an AC1200 extender with 2x2 internal antenna, USB 2.0 port, and uses a low-cost Realtek processor.

So yes, EX7000 is much higher-end and its price is almost double of DAP-1650. Setup:

Another A1 question..

Hi guys, just got my Lumin in. I'm also looking into the L1. Problem with that is my current library on (J.River 21 / Windows PC) is larger than the 2 TB. I'm not so much worried about that.

Can the Lumin iPad app work with / view the library on my J.River 21 / Windows PC?

I expect this to work after enabling DLNA server (and/or other settings) in JRiver, please try and report. Initially, disable conversions first and experiment with it later if you want to.

I interpreted the question you sent me via another forum as setting up JRiver as a controller (instead of setting JRiver as a server and using Lumin app), so I answered accordingly.

Thanks Peter,

I got that far. So far it's working very well. I like the fact I can use JRiver's library, also the Lumin app keeps all JRiver's tags in place.

I have a few questions. I only got as far as playing red book files using the Lumin app on the iPad / A-1 /JRiver 21 on a laptop with files stored on an external drive station via eSATA.

First:
What's the difference between Generic DLNA and Audiophile 24 bit? I see both. Does this mean my 24 bit files will not play if I choose Generic DLNA?

Second:
What is the configuration if I want to play all files from Red book and HiRes (AIFF, FLAC, WAV) to DSD (DIFF, DSF) without having to manual change anything? Do I have to make any changes in DSP to plan all files including DIFF, DSF?

Here's my setup prior to the A-1:

JRiver 21 / Windows on a dedicated custom C.A.P.S:

This is the house for the CPU (motherboard), SOtM USB card and Blu Ray drive: http://atechfabrication.com/products/HeatSync_2800HP_Mini-Client.htm

This is the file storage station: http://atechfabrication.com/products/mass_storage_2500.htm connected to the motherboard (2800HP) via eSATA.

The DAC was the EMM Labs DAC2X and others...

I also have an unRAID server, I have the same music files stored on the unRAID server as the external storage station.

My setup now:

Lumin A-1
iPad Pro running the Lumin app as the controller.

Here's antoher question I have to get answered from testing.
JRiver running on a windows laptop pulling files from the unRAID server (preferred) or pulling files from the external storage station.

The problem with the unRAID server is that it does not broadcast UPnP or DLAN on it's own. I have Plex Media Server running in a Docker on unRAID and it broadcast UPnP. But Plex totally jacks up all my tags and art work. Using Plex for music is an unacceptable solution for me.

1. With my minimal experience with JRiver, I guess Generic DLNA and 24-bit Audiophile DAC differs in the default settings. If you use JRiver as controller, Lumin should be set up as 24-bit Audiophile via DLNA. Let's see what response you get in JRiver forum.

2. Disable all JRiver conversions as a start. Make sure the Bitstream DSD and DoPE options are checked as per my message. Do not touch the DSP settings, some of them are not supposed to work via DLNA for current release, as far as I know.

3. I don't quite understand all the implications of the options you can have regarding the server side setup. I believe JRiver should work as a media server.
