A message for all:

To my friends in the United States, Happy Thanksgiving;

To my friends in other counties, it's easy for us to always focus on the negative in our lives or what we "want" and are "don't have", but let us take today to be thankful for the many blessings we DO have.

In the United States today is the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season and wanting to look for great sales to buy things.

* * * Let us not forget about the meaning of being humble, thankful, kind to others and helping others in the spirit of the holidays. And if you are religious don't forget the TRUE meaning of Christmas. * * *

Picture: my favorite Dry Mastiha from Greece that is NOT possible to get in the USA. So I'm only able to get 1 bottle a year.

Meantime: while you Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, here is something else going on. Every single year in November a ship from Spain arrives in the harbour. It is the parcels boat from Sinterklaas (not Santa Claus). He is very rich and every year he prepares presents for the people: especially kids. He rides on a white horse, and is surrounded with a lot of helpers (Pieten) to bring every parcel around.

Those Pieten are funny and very happy, making all dances and jokes, but they also make a lot of stupid mistakes. Wish lists wrong, presents gone, 2 persons swapped, damaged items, and every year the delivery of the presents is in serious danger. For the interests about this: every day is a look at the warehouse in the Sinterklaas news on tv. It is always a mess and it never goes smoothly. They always give the impression that they don't make it in time. This continues on until December 5th.

In the meantime there are all kind of celebrations, at schools, when a Piet goes in and throws with Peppernuts (kind of small round cookie) with small presents, but also some surprise visits in the inner cities with a lot of dances and music. At certain days you may put your shoe. The carrot is for the horse and at night someone sneaks in and replaces the vegetable with a small present.

At Sinterklaas birthday December 5th is the big evening: Parcels evening. Those guys walk on the roofs and throw it in the chimney. Because modern houses don't have any, they hide the presents somewhere else in the house and when the doorbell rings you may open them. Not so fast, some are with a poem: you have to read it first and some are quite nice, others a bit mean about stupid blunders you made this year. While everyone opens and celebrates the evening: the boat returns to Spain.
