Joe you are such a tease!
No doubt about that,Doug !

you do have to consider cartridge compliance when using the 3-D arm. If you're using a low compliance and low mass cartridge (<10 gms), it probably won't be a good match.
Do you know what the effective arm mass is for the 12" 3D? Or 10.5"?
I went from a 10.5i to the 3D. Using the same cartridge (Benz LPS) the 3D was much less hifi, and more like real music. Effortless, etc. ...definately a better sound.
One mod which Stirling recommended was the Nordost FUT which replaced the standard VPI feet..

Larry,
Thanks for the info about your experience with your VPI, setup and cartridges...
Nordost Sort OR Nordost FUT ??
I thought that the Sort Fut are footers used as feet for equipment racks... and Sort cones were footers used under equipment ?
Not familiar with the standard VPI feet.... but I can see that the Fut would/could thread into the base of the VPI... and the Sort cones are not threaded... Thanks for the heads up !
All the best,
Tom
I've had my VPI Classic 3 which I ordered with the 3D tonearm for the better part of a year. Very happy with it. It replaced the super fancy HRX with a RIM drive and the 12.7 (or maybe 12.6) arm. My set up consultant Stirling Trayle recommended the Classic 3 over a few other top tables. His pal Roy Gregory had the same set up I had (HRX) and switched to the Classic 3. I even looked at the VPI Direct, but ended up with the Classic 3. One mod which Stirling recommended was the Nordost FUT which replaced the standard VPI feet. I also swithed to the Soundsmith Zephyr II from the more pricey Lyra Skala. Also have a Miyajima Zero mono cartridge, but with a standard VPI arm.
When Stirling set up everything, he also dialed in the SRA settings for regular and 180g records, so I have them for the arm, cartridge and TT combo. What he showed me, and I was able to hear, the differenced in SRA settings - what to listen for and how the correct setting makes a clear difference.
