2015 TAVES ( Toronto Audio Video Entertainment Show )

My opinion is bold letters

As for overall best room, let's just say Audio by Mark Jones was clearly the best room both sonically and visually. Mark and his team (including DJ Paul), did a terrific job with lighting and room layout. The room was constantly packed and I observed comments in the hallway - all positive.

- Totally agree with you. The room had some bass issues other than that overall it was most inviting and warm and cozy room. Also the appearance of Tannoy and Tenor was made them look a like brother and sister. I think I flipped more than 100 LP's LOL
But I was happy to be part of his show. David and Jim from Tenor was so gentle men and I was having fun with Louis ( Kronos ) :D

My favorite speakers were the Focal Scala V2's. Even driven by modestly priced NAD,

I should listened little longer but my experience was it's overall good sound but wasn't any special though.

On the flip side, I was disappointed in the NAD Statement amps paired with Focal Utopias. Was a hard room to stomach.

Actually I kind liked this room. When they play some live music it was so realistic I fell like I was there but for the money ? Meh...

The chi-Fi Spatials DID sound better than the Spatials, but their build quality leaves a lot to be desired. VERY DIY looking with the crossover bolted to a piece of wood supporting the frame, but for $3999, they sounded great and could have sold dozens of pairs. People kept asking to buy the demo pair (which sold quickly on the first day).

It was actually $3,500 and sold it less for show special. they will comes in three different boxes and kind of DIY kits . the sounds was surprisingly good ( maybe I just liked the big driver - Look what I have LOL ) but yes Mike It can sell like a hot cake. However even it was open baffle speakers but sounds wasn't really open.... well,,,maybe didn't broke in yet

I still have a soft spot for TIDAL speakers and the Estelon's. Although both rooms weren't ideal and I have no idea what brand of electronics was shown with the Tidal's, I still feel both have lots of potential.

The Estelon speakers looks so modern but sounds wasn't it was powered by Ayre mono blocks and using burmester phono with top of the line Brinkman TT. the sounds was fabulous only thing was the speakers were little too close ( 6 feets ? ) few more fts would make better I think

A real dark horse surprise for me was how impressed I was with the JBL K2 S9900's. I've never heard Hugh Masakela sound that good!

I always been huge JBL Speakers. Love them on Jazz and Rock. This time I thought I was in the club. Just high and bass was lot but missing the mid. I didn't get a chance to listen any jazz maybe that's why :(

Adrian also did a great job with the Sasha2/Dag room. Always packed and sounded great.

Adrian had a great set up. Sasha2/Dag - Best marriage IMHO . The room was wide and huge.Just hoping he had some decoration to go with. The sounds was excellent and Good Job Adrian :)

The Karma DB9's were so boomy. Would love to hear those properly setup.

The Kharma DB9 has been one of my all time fav for last 2 years. Once you hear them in properly set up room their bass is not boomy at all , in fact very tight , kick in hard but nothing leaves behind. Mike you might heard some bass over next door which was HT room and I could feel the vibration in that room while I was staying.

James & Bryston Co. once again showed just what is possible in high end for not-so-stupid money. The Model T's sound much much better than their price tag would lead you to believe. With the BDP-3 coming down the pipe, there are lots of exciting things happening at Bryston.

The Bryston Model with 28Bs sounds always good to my ears. I actually think his speakers is most bargain in hi-end audio. Anybody in the market for under $20K must listen the model T speakers .

Two more room I enjoyed was How nice little System Audio book shelf speakers , Mod Wright amps and Well Tempered Amadeus with Charisma Audios new cartridge set up. they sounds was very well balanced and don't have to break the bank.

And MBL book shelf speakers with whole MBL gears as well . Hey you can get the whole MBL set up for around 30K Now thats a bargain :P

Paul,

Superb job and descriptions. Thank you for your opinion. Very much appreciated. Great photos too. :)

Paul - I clearly know when bass is coming from another room or the room I'm in. The Karma's were boomy in that narrow room. I've heard them in a big room and they sounded superb. Smooth.

If you read what I wrote - I said I was unaware of what amps were driving the Tidal speakers.

The Chi-Fi Spatials really needed to be out more from the wall to breath. They were kind of crammed in there.

As for the V2's, you need to be able to appreciate just how weird the V1's sounded. The V2's are a sublime example of seamless integration in a musical package.

Yeah, I struggled for about a year trying to love the V1's, never happened. The mid to top was very good, but I was always searching for the right balance bass-wise. I assumed at the time it was room related, maybe not eh.

OK, y'all got to hear a lot in the $20K and up rooms, since a few of us on here can't afford $20k speakers and amps, do any of you that attended this show or say RMAF have any feelings on say speakers and amps in the UNDER $10k range that would be worthy of a person with a retirement budget. :peace:

Chris, my Florida Brother, just to clarify: $10k for both speakers and amps? Not $10k for speakers and $10k for amps?

Further, stereo amp? Integrated? Tubes? SS? Don't care?

How big is your room? What kind of music do you listen to? Do you have any idea of the average volume (SPL in DB) you listen at?

Thanks Mike and all fellow Sharkies

The Bryson Model T, if you would like more scale, deeper bass and better dynamics in that good sized room of yours.

Thanks for the kind words guys. The Wilson / D'Agostino room was a nightmare in many ways. Left wall was floor to ceiling windows, right side had a cubby space that boomed like crazy, acting like a bass trap. By Friday morning I'd almost decided to lock the door and not exhibit in the room. Finally Vince Galbi from MSB suggested we pull the speakers all the way out (about 12' from the back wall). That helped tremendously but we lost warmth and deep bass. Perhaps if we do it again next year, we will have more time to set up. With 3 rooms and our headphone/accessories booth, we just ran out of time. My apologies to all who came by and didn't get to hear what the system is capable of. And my sincerest thanks to Harry and Francesco from D'Agostino Audio and Vince from MSB who worked so hard in the room.

i should also thank Dale Mackintosh, rep from McIntosh and Wadia who did most of the demos in the room, and finally my tireless staff who ran the event with me. I'm truly grateful.

I didn't get much time to visit the show unfortunately. I dropped by at Mark's room and met Paul who was having a blast. Unfortunately did not get to speak with Mark who was busy. I liked the little speakers connected to the Devialet I believe. Sounded very good and I'm told will be quite inexpensive. The Gershman speakers for about. $12,000 I believe, also sounded very nice. The open baffle speakers in Grant Fidelity's room rocked! Full bodied and had very good bass. Would love to hear them in a proper setting. The big Naim Statements driving the Focals also sounded lovely.

Had a great time overall though it was very hectic. I'm sorry if I didn't get to meet you.

Thank you Mark, what makes it difficult down here in sunny Fla, is listening to any of the speakers you mentioned. Close by I have a Revel and JBL Synthesis dealer , RBH Kef, Thiel, unless I drive to Tampa or Miami.

Yeah sorry Adrian, I saw you and was hoping to get away and say hi, I just couldn't get free in time. Thanks for taking the time to visit.

Chris, yes I get it, almost impossible to choose speakers without hearing them. Maybe a road trip is your only choice.

That appears to be a bucket list item for a down south audio trip. I do owe Mike a visit and then move further south. I have heard the Revel F208 and they bring a lot to the table for their price.

Chris, the Revel speakers will be very hard to beat for the money. See if you can do an in home demo and then you will know.
