Well, I've known this for years and used music like this (well, still do), not only for myself, but helped others as well by anything from putting together lists of suggested music even down to specifics to making CDs for people for particular requests to doing group sessions (didn't do too many of those as I was not real comfy with that and they are not easy due to dynamics involved). In fact, I even did it on radio a few times! That trick was kind of cool, I must say.
Music is the most powerful force in the universe and yet the gentlest at the same time. One has to choose to surrender to it, it does not force one. Even folks who hate music, period react to it and there are not too many of them around. Everybody is effected by music whether they realize it or not as there are so many levels. That's part of the reason it is such a great tool. After all, it has been used throughout time, thousands of years! In fact, if you get into the weeds you realize that music is part of the foundation of life. Just take the functions of our bodies for example = precise timing of heart rhythms, etc.
The great things is that almost anyone can use music in the ways listed in the article, all it takes is awareness in listening and one doesn't need a degree to do it. I chose to go into the weeds and depths myself, but that started with simply listening with awareness.
I can go into a whole thesis, but it would take forever and the thread would be 500 pages and who has that kind of time? I don't.
