Here are my Ampex ATR 102's. The back one uses a Doshi 3.0 prepro for playback updated 12/16. The front one was redone by Mike Spitz of ATR Services 8 years ago. Both have 1/4" and 1/2" headblocks. The back one also has a 1/4" 4 track stereo playback head for 4 track stereo tapes. Most of my 15ips 2 track tape collection, about 500 tapes.

There are four tape decks in this photo of my studio control room, a Revox B77 MkII half track, a Akai GX-636 quarter track, a Nakamichi CR-7A cassette deck, and a Sony DAT 60 ES.

Here I am having some fun.

How is the Akai .....

The Akia GX-636 is a fine sounding quarter track machine. I don't do any live recording direct to it because the Revox B77 Mk II half track machine has superior signal to noise and greater dynamic range. I use the GX-636 primarily when someone comes to me with quarter track audition tapes they want copied to DAT or cassette for mailing purposes. It is a smooth operating reel to reel and I am fortunate to have the wired remote controls for the Akia and the Revox.

Is that all you got .... :)

6 years ago this was my herd of RTR decks.

2 Studer A-820's, one Nagra 'T', and an ATR-102. I also had a Nagra IV-S mini deck.

to help fund my speaker (MM7) and amp (dart 458) upgrades I culled the herd to 'just' the 1/4" and 1/2" Studer A-820's. so I'm muddling by with those 2 these days.

Just jumped in with a Revox A77 Mark III. Dipping the toe in the water with 3.75 and 7.5 ips.

So where is the best place to begin looking for a R2R deck?

Any pointers would be appreciated especially from sources that deal with 240V versions!

Cheers

Howie

Hi Dan...I reside in The Villages, Fl and have been an audioenthusiast for some 40 yrs. Lamm electronics, Studer A810, VPI TNT MKV, Dunlavy VI speakers. Would love to connect with you...

Here at last. The legendary ATR-102. This is made in 1980 and is in working condition. However, the capstan has worn out its rubber so I am planning to change the capstan and the timer wheel assembly along with it. I am looking at atrservices, athon and other manufacturers, and open to suggestions.
I used to have r2r machines but this is no consumer or a prosumer machine, this is the real deal :) so happy. There is a learning curve in front of me but I am willing to go down that route. Getting oscilloscopes, calibration tapes etc.
Started buying hq tapes but wont be playing them until I turn this machine into its tip top condition.
