New MSB S500 and M500 Amplifiers

very nice Mike!

that is one amp i can't wait to hear. i'm sure it's a perfect match with the Select II.

i look forward to when you have enough time with it to contrast it with some other amps you have.

Thanks Mike. With the MSB DAC's, it's the best match hands down compared to anything we've tried. Like I said above, the amp completely sounds like the Select II.

You have to use the 75ohm setting. I have the gain at high. Haven't played much with the gain. I find myself listening in the 70's on the VC and 80 is very loud in the 20 x 25 room that's open. It's absolutely perfect for the MSB DAC's. The amp sounds like the Select II DAC. Period. That's the review of this amp in a nutshell.
I listened to M500 directly connected with Select DAC in 2 systems.
For both of them I liked the middle gain more.
The volume of the Select was in the 70+.

I wonder what is the sonic difference between the stereoamp and the monoblocks. One costing one-half of the other, but with practically the same power specs on paper. wondering has anyone compared the two side by side?
Regards

The monos gave a great sense of ease and seemed ready to pounce dynamically at a moments notice. Soundstage was also bigger with the monos. I tried to detect whether the stereo might have a different tonal presentation, but really couldn’t detect any.

Thanks. That sounds familiar to when I upgraded my Vitus SS103 to the monoblocks SM103. Even though in hindsight it wasn’t really necessary for my room size and speakers.

To all friends using the MSB 500, how long did it take you to run them in?
I just took delivery of my Select and the M500, and burning them in. The Select drives the M500 directly.
At this time after 1 day of playing, they sound a bit soft, or should I say lacking in weight in the mid band.
My previous amplification was the Vitus MPS and MPL.
Regards

I am operating the same set up you have. I ran my M500's for three days 24 hrs / day at low volume and found that they settled in nicely. I have not experienced the sonic issue you describe.

Congrats on the Select DAC and M500 monoblocks! What speakers do you have for this wonderful system?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I replaced my M500's footers with those huge Stillpoint SS5 footers. Will go back to the stock footers next week if the issue persists, and see if the Stillpoints caused it.

MSB just came out with brand new amp footers that are supposed to be superior to the stock footers. I would suggest ordering these if you don’t already have them.

That news hadn't come out yet a few months ago. That's why I ordered the Stillpoints. Stillpoints had worked well with my Vitus Amp. but maybe not this time with MSB amps. Will see. Will try the MSB amp footers when they become available. My Select DAC and transport did come with the new footers.
Regards,

What u are describing about the sound of your M500's is exactly what I have heard with those Stillpoint footers...therein lies your problem...

After 3 days of continuous burn in, the sound has settled in significantly and blossomed. The mid band still sounds a bit soft/recessed to my ears. The Stillpoint remains a conjecture till I have more hours on the burn in. The isolation devices are often a hit and miss thing, giving you some sonics benefits but can take away others.

Here is photo of my MSB set up. The amps are on the Stilpoints. I have a ceramic tile floor which has proven to be not so good for all my previous mono amps.

Beautiful system and a very efficient use of space. Just one question, why not place one amp on either side of the DAC and Transport?

Best,
Ken

Thanks for compliment Ken. I am constrained by the length of my power cords and the position of the wall outlets needed to do it. Didn't want to have an electrician in to reposition the outlets, or get a power distributor for my sources components. Hence, this layout is the best I can manage for now.
