Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I agree entirely, but my multi-amp home tests after deciding to move away from SETs resulted in a top podium for a first-class Class D amp. An AB was a close second and an A took the bronze, but the latter 2 were double the price. Certainly Class D offers best value and is unlikely to be...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

The home tests were all done when I was using Avantgarde speakers, so always like-for-like comparisons, when judging sound quality. Doubtless others amps in my tests may have been better suited to other speakers, but I have no intention of moving from ASGs.

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I've never used 45 or 2A3-based amps but I had one that used the wonderful PX-25 from Art Audio. Sublime for lots of music but a little gasping with Mahler at high volumes! I've only had one 300B (from Audio Note but not their top-of-the-range) and I was decidedly disappointed - not a patch on...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

But your comments about inadaquate power supplies, etc apply equally to Class A or AB amps. In fact more so as Class D requires so much less of the voltages required compared with AB and even more so, Class A ones. But I sgree there's lots of crap Class D around o cater for the mid-fi guys who...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

Yes. There was a posting here (or maybe another high-end forum) where someone asked whether one obscure amp sold in minute numbers would be an ideal match for an equally obscure speaker. Although AI could refer to specs of these obscure items, the only way it could possibly be able to answer the...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

Ask yourself where AI has gained the knowledge to come up with those answers. It surely must rely on human opinions by way of (for example) reviews, comments on forums, etc. AI has no ears, has no labs to test equipment so you must surely take little notice of what it says - better still...

Audiophiles without a dedicated listening room — what drives you nuts?

I've never heard of a radon fan, or that radon is a problem - maybe because I live in radon-free UK! I'm sure there's radon everywhere, but I've never heard of it, or mention of it until today in this thread. OK, I selfishly have no wife - far too costly, particularly if you feel the need to...

    Kef 107 CROSSOVER REBUILD

I can't answer your question about crossover mods, but do the 107s you're considering come with the KUBE "active low-frequency equaliser"? This can be used as intended, but I must admit I didn't include these KUBEs in my system. They require extra unbalanced cables and I heard no real advantage...

    Kef 107 CROSSOVER REBUILD

Which KEF 107 are we talking about - this Reference 107, or the more recent but not top-of-the range 107?

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I agree, and the toxic views expressed so often on ASR do nothing to encourage audio listening. However you can't deny that ASR forum gets more postings than all the other forums combined! Crazy, but perhaps all members there don't actually listen to music, but spend their time reading others'...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

Sadly some of those ASR guys put their noses in here too - you know who you are! Whenever presented with an experience-based and logically explained point of view, they will never respond with an experience-based or logically explained reply. They will just say "Prove it" and point towards...

    25 Most Underrated Vintage Speakers

Interesting that you regretted selling those omni-directional speakers. My own room lends itself to omnis (being semi-circulsr with dining and kitchen areas behind the speakers) and a couple of years ago I was seriously considering getting either German Physics or MBL omnis. These were...

Is Class A still the king of tone?

My findings regarding Class A and Class D amps are very similar to yours. However I would add to your last paragraph that there are some amps that may offer "complete accuracy without embellishments" that are nevertheless drearily dull and lifeless, despite being fed music that others amps will...

Is Class A still the king of tone?

But do you want a "warm and fuzzy" sound from your system? I would prefer a life-like sound that matches as close a possible a non-amplified live performance in a concert hall or other venue. Dynamic and punchy perhaps, rather than warm and fuzzy! But that's just me!

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I'm with you on these points, although I'm not an expert either. For me, the only real reason for buying any hi-fi is to enjoy the music. Who cares about what the geeks at ASR make of their measurements? I'm pretty sure that most of those guys are actually deaf, so the only way they can judge...
