SPDIF is the protocol for both, and TOSLink. Each has pluses, and minuses, and quality of information. Electrical/optical signals with several differing methods of transmission, and methods of preventing corruption of that signal. So you would have to try individually.

TOSLink? I use TOSLink from my Samsung TV fed to my DAC. He is extracting Stereo from the HDMI, and using RCA into his powered speakers? Extracted audio has been terribly time disjointed from the video in my experience.

Check your grounding, and tubes, before getting crazy. Consider trying to power it at someone else’s house. I think “acceptable” hum is the kind you can just perceive with your ear right at the speaker. Worse with high efficiency speakers. Consult the manufacturer.
