Maybe it’s always been like this…

I’ve been buying and/or selling used gear for well over 30 years now. Other than my first experience with the buyer from Hell (which resulted in a 10 year retreat), most of my 35-40 transactions have been good, although there’s also little doubt that first fiasco made me a good deal more...

Is Class A still the king of tone?

A 3-dimensional, holographic presentation is important to me, but I will also observe that (in my experience) the interaction between the speakers and the amplifier is a big part of that. Some speakers don’t seem to like certain amps, or maybe it’s more accurate to say that some amps don’t like...

My retreat from a streamer to a basic preamp

A friend of mine had that preamp. It was a good sounding unit as I recall, especially after I talked him into horizontally biamping those stratus golds instead of bridging the 4B SSTs.. 😳

    Gobel Divin Monarque

Impressive to be sure, but 380 Kg is 836 lbs. I’d be interested to know how you’d get speakers that heavy into someone’s home, since it generally isn’t practical to expect to drive a lift truck in someone’s front door.

My retreat from a streamer to a basic preamp

I’d expect that, actually. Unless I’m completely mistaken, the SF was a quite a bit more expensive than the Freya. At this point, I’ve owned five tube preamps, and two tube power amps. All of them sounded different. Most of the time, I’ve found it to my advantage to have tubes somewhere in the...

Wilson Audio Unveils Stunning New Flagship Speaker

Egads. Someone must ascribe to the old motto, “Too much is never enough.” 🙄

Wilson Audio Unveils Stunning New Flagship Speaker

Before my wife & son conspired to put an Apple watch on me, I was wearing a Timex. 😏 It’s interesting to me how extravagance can seem so reasonable in our chosen field of insanity, but appear so outrageous in the other guy’s field of interest.

Wilson Audio Unveils Stunning New Flagship Speaker

FWIW, from my perspective it ceased being about sound long before these price levels were reached. It was finally made clear to me by a very wise friend a few years ago when we were talking generally about such extreme luxury products: “They want it BECAUSE it’s expensive.” Very few can afford...

Creative gear photos - post 'em here

How very disappointing. The construction of your rack appears to be disturbingly similar to that of my own, and here I thought that I had created something new. I should have known better…must have seen something similar somewhere along the line. It just goes to show - nothing new under the sun...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I do like them. Very much, actually. The Antares 300B SET seems made for them. I think they only have about a week of use on them, but they opened up considerably after a few days and seem to be getting steadily better with time. The current setup in which I’m listening as we speak is the PS...

For the more technically adept than myself…

I have two PS Audio dacs - a Directstream and a Stellar Gain Cell. I would like to use both the balanced and unbalanced outputs of either DAC simultaneously, the RCA to a power amp and the balanced output to the subs. The balanced outputs have 6 dB higher output according to PS Audio. I’ve had...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

The JBLs do in fact like that big SET. A lot. Actually, it’s the best possible outcome because I had wanted to keep the Odeons on the Rowland in any case.

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I picked up the 3800s at a fire sale price intending to take them to my cabin, but made the mistake of having them delivered to my primary residence. My spouse decided that she had more appreciation for the JBLs visually, so it’s the Odeons going to the cabin. Either way it was fine. Both will...

Switched to Class D or get left behind?

I had a pair of Walsh 4s. They were very nice speakers as well. They did like to be driven by an amp with extravagant power delivery, though. 😏
