Magico S5 mk3

..Back in the day the dealer had S3, S5, and S7 to demo...

Back in the day S3, S5 and S7 were about half the price of today's Mk3's. That's a lot of money for a dealer to wear to have demo examples sitting in a show room. Speakers of this pedigree could be drop shipped with confidence, and presumably that would be reflected in the price if there were no demo overheads that ought to be covered. I'm not sure how pricing works in the US but charging MSRP for box shifting doesn't sound right to me.

Back in the day, there was no A series. Only Q and S.

The dealer also regularly stocked the Q-series and M-series speakers as well. With that said, I have not been to the dealer since 2018 and maybe post-Covid the dealer has decided to cut back on inventory.

With that said, I will not spend $50K+ on a new set of speakers without a demo first. Would be the equivalent to buying a new car without a test drive. Lastly, I would also like to know some technical details on the foam surrounds in the new speakers as well.

I'm the opposite. I've never demo'd a speaker before I ordered it. And never test drive a car before ordering it. The only demo I've done is the Halcro Eclipse power amp, and the Ether Regen. Everything else is bought sight unseen, including cars. The last car I bought the dealer didn't even have one in the showroom. The way it works is, if you want it, order it, pay in full, and it arrives 6 months later (give or take).

WOW, not sure how you can tell if you like speaker A over speaker B if you don't even demo it.

I've bought two pairs of Magico speakers, Gryphon Diablo 300 and the HiFi Rose 150b without demoing any of them. You buy with faith and a lot of Youtube, reviews and other peoples experiences. With each purchase, I've been more than pleased with my choices.

And I forgot. My first test drive of a Tesla Model 3 awd was when I payed for it and drove it away.

Just highlighting the reality of living in the worlds most isolated capital city. The last two new cars I bought the dealers didn't have any cars they could show me. None. The wait for a new Kia was 6 months from placing order. You couldn't test drive one simply because there were no cars to test drive. And if I want to demo a Magico speaker the nearest showroom with a Magico speaker to demo is a 5 day drive. Not 5 hours. 5 DAYS.

Where do you live ? the Outback ? :disbelief: On a serious note Sydney isn't that far, I'm surprised they don't have a Magico Dealer ?

Regardless, I get your point

Might have been easier to understand the price increase if Magico had called the new S5 an S6. It appears to be a lot closer to an S7 than it used to be, on paper anyway.

So much so I've been told that there will be no S7 update/replacement (at least for now). The S5 2024 appears to be the top of the S series range for Magico. The next jump will be to the M series.

If anyone has heard anything to the contrary I'd be curious to know. I plan on spending time at AXPONA trying to learn about the plans for the updated Magico product-line. Based on the attention the new S5 has generated I won't be alone.

The S5 MkII Mcast price had increased to $45,400. before the new S5 MkIII. So the price increase for the new S5 is about 64%.

Given the (almost) $30K price increase from the S5 Mk2 to the S5 Mk3, I would NOT consider an upgrade to the Mk4 if and when it comes out. I plan to retire in the next six years so this purchase would have to last a good 25 years for the ROI to make sense. Otherwise, I will just keep the Mk2 which are no slouch of a loudspeaker by any means.
While I understand wanting value for price of any component, ROI, unless you know how to factor in smiles and toe tapping, is not a measure to be used here.

These equipment companies are playing the marketing/R&D game.

You either see/feel the value or you don’t. Math is not part of the value equation in this industry.

Everytime I listen to the Mk2 I have been tapping my toes and smiling and will continue to do so for many more years. I cannot justify the price of a well-appointed BMW 5-series for the S5 2024 when the S5 Mk2 was the price of a Toyota. I realize everyone has different determinations of value. I also like the fact that my Mk2 have rubber surrounds which will outlast any foam surround.

The S7 boasts a larger volume (18% - 20%) and includes a third 10" bass driver. However, overall, the technology in the new S5 surpasses that of the S7.
As an previous owner of S3mk2 and current owner of S3mk3, I can attest to the noticeable jump in performance, finesse, and articulation of the new speakers, making it impossible to ignore.

Having seen this beauty in person this weekend, I can honestly say, this should have been called the S6. The dual 10’s (vs dual 9’s) look so much bigger. The cabinet looks soooooo much bigger. S6 for me all day.

Oh and the fit and finish is far more M like.

I agree Mike. It looked great.

I think Magico is set to retire the S7 design and put it in it's rightful place in the pantheon of other great past successes.
