Magico S5 mk2

Mike! Have you been in my underwear draw again?

Must be Aussie humor. I don't get it. [emoji19]

Very interesting!

But to be fair.

How many ARC amps? Or . . . . .

I have often wondered about that. The speed at which Audio Research releases their "Reference" pre-amps and amps is ridiculous. It is amazing how they can find enough improvements to replace their previous model(s) within a couple of years. Resale value is bound to take a significant hit.

Discussion: are these engineering centric companies, marketing centric companies or both?

I've razzed on ARC, but I think Magico's pace of product launches and engineering outstrips them by a long shot.

Mike this nothing new with next model up big speakers. The cabinet is where most (maybe I should just say a lot) of the cost of a Magico speaker is. The S7 weighs twice as much as the outgoing S5's.

How much more are Q7 mkI's over a pair of Q5's - 100k??? Same amount of woofers just bigger ones.

My guess is engineering oriented. If you have newer, better technology then why not use it. The alternative is just do nothing and milk the cash cow for every penny.

To be fair, that's life and it happens with cars, dishwashers and many other things in life. It doesn't make the original S5 bad by any means. But we know how SOME audiophiles like to swap out gear, me included.

Mike,

I'm really surprised that Alon is not offering the Mk2 upgrade to S5 owners. I know many were waiting anxiously for it. I guess he's only interested in taking care of Q7 owners. I wonder how much money this decision will cost S5 owners in resale value? Painful when the stroke of a pen costs you thousands. C'est la vie.

I think the S5 is now 4-5 years old. It was the first of the S series, and Magico has learnt some things, and made driver improvement. So, why not update it?

I agree it would be nice to have an S5 upgrade. However, what needs to be done internally for the mid enclosure? Are the new driver screw holes in the same location as the original? If not, a new baffle is needed. We know the top has to be replaced. Of course, Magico will melt down any replaced aluminum and reuse it as something else. Let's give them a bit to definitively state there will be no upgrade.

Fair enough, Bud.

According to commentary on another forum, cabinet is less deep/shallower on mk iis so no way to upgrade original S1/S5s because cabinet is different, which I suspect has to do with matching body geometry/volume to new drivers used.

I can't keep up. I could have sworn we just heard about the S7 a few weeks ago.

Maybe call the S5 mk2, the S6?

LOL. I guess we won't know, since you did ban him. :)

As long as we are on the subject, he was right that the S7 top is a separate enclosure, while I felt the line on the side was cosmetic.

I was just following audio forum tradition. [emoji6]

Regardless, just because one model receives an upgrade doesn't automatically make the old one bad. The S5's with Pass/Vitus is excellent.

That is true. I am currently enjoying the Hades out of mine. I finally added ground cables from both amps to the Triton, and it does seem to have added a bit more openness and subtle detail to the music. I need to spend another eight hours or so listening to music to solidify that feeling. :)

Not bad, just really hard to sell for a decent price. Take my K-01 for example, same deal, even though a partial upgrade is available to PCM 384/DSD 64.
