Tube Rolling for Lampizator Level 7

For anyone who has a head DAC I have a new set of tubes coming . I'll post when I get them. This should be better than the vt99 tube , I need a few weeks to get the tubes and adaptors

Hi, I am selling my KR 274b. This rectifier valve is for sale at 182 EUR. KR would additionally charge you tax (usually 20%), bank charge, and postage. Postage is free from me in EU and UK but I will charge elsewhere.

Hardly used since I don't have speakers to play. In the Lampi we preferred it much more to the EML recti

What were the characteristics differences between the two.

The EML is too laid back and lacks the soundstage, bass, and dynamics of the KR rectis. In KR rectis the special Lampi 5u4g is better, but only a few restricted numbers were produced and are sold out, so is unobtanium.

Btw, my KR 274b is now sold.

I've got the regular EML 5u4g, and bought the KR 274b which I will try out tonight. Exciting!

Hi,
Have a Lampi B7, currently using KR 5u4g as recti. and KR 300b output. Would like to get feedback on what changes KR 242 output would have? [amps are 90W tube mono's]

thanks,
Jay

Thank you for the kind words, hopefully you'll get some great recommendations soon.

Jay - I personally found the gain on the 242 too much. Frankly, way too much with my B7. I would go with the PX4 instead. Sounds better IMO too. I have a pair of PX4's coming if you're interested.

It was the same for me on my original GG but NOT on my old B7. When I sent the GG back for upgrades I told Lukasz I wanted to uses trhe 242 and now, it works GREAT. The mv output on my old GG was 2500 and now its 700mv.

The 242 is waaaay more dynamic. great tube. I like the Px4 as well nd also the plain vanilla 6a3. Not a metal base 101d fan.

Mike is right - if there is a mismatch the 242 will sound too much. But if not it beat everything by a factor of 10. Ideally one should get the speaker, then the Lampi with 242. Add the power amp to drive the speaker, and then the pre that drives the power but matches the gain requirement in the chain.

This is feedback from an owner of Big 7 and Apogees - I had travelled from London to NY to listen to his Apogees - http://zero-distortion.org/a-lampiapogee-duetta-user-on-the-kr-242/

had my GG upgraded in December 2016 with all the goodies, including a gain adjustment for the KR242 tube. it was a significant step up to be able to use that tube. lot's more dynamic and refined. I had used the Elrog's up to that point which were very good, but they are not in the KR242's league when compared directly. I've continued to use the Tak 274b recti which is a good match for the 242.

I couldn't agree more with you, Mike.
I had 242 for a while in my B7 SE with Duelunds but swapped with PX4 then and I am really satisfied, in my setup they are just perfect.
Of course in different setup 242 could be a better match but rather not with very efficient speakers like AG.

Christoph used them on Odeon nr.32 horns. He couldn't use them with one amp but swapped to Kronzilla and it was fine. It is not so much as efficiency but as total gain in the chain, I think. What is your pre and power gain together, and what is Mike's?

Don't know precise numbers , I have Crossfire INT.
The output volume of my B7 is a standard one now but when speakers were under burning up Lukasz reduced the gain and it was something like 2,5 - 3 V on PCM.
During last update two month ago or so it was adjusted to standard gain though.
According to the specification the input impedance of Crossfire is 100 k ohm.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. Sounds like there could be potential mismatch with 242.
Should the output voltage be listed on my spec sheet from Lukasz?

Since I'm familiar with sound of KR300's...what would the diff's be between PX4 and 300? Thanks again for the help!

PX4 is a little more dynamic, but retains most of the good qualities of the 300b. It's kind of a swiss army knife of Lampi tubes. To me the 242 and 101D are over the top with resolution. Good only for classical IMO. The PX4 is a jack of all trade tube. It does everything well.

300b are boooring. Flat, dull, no dynamics.
