Rectifier for your Lampizator

Still one pair left gents... (Lampi/KR Anniversary 5U4G)

Mike, did you ever receive the EML 274.
If so, what was your opinion on it?

Anyone else’s comment is welcome on this tube.

Hi Caelin, no, I didn’t get it. I did buy a EML 80 for my little Yamamoto amp. For rectifier, I like the WE274b and this rare bird 1944 RCA.

Caelin,

Feedback from a pal in fürstentum Liechtenstein :
"In the beginning I wasn't too fond of the EML 274b mesh but with some
serious hours of burn-in, it got a lot better and grew on me. I still prefer
the KR 5u4g by a margin but I prefer the EML over all the others I have.
So EML is my no 2 recti from the ones I heard."

Feedback from a NYC pal who owns a dozen rectis for his 2 Lampis, including the WE 274b, Tak 274b, Phillips metal base GZ34, Lampi Anniv Kron 5u4g, Shuguang 274b, Mazda "foreign made" double mica 5R4gy, 1944 RCA like Mike has, etc.

He also has ALL the fashionable DHTs for the Dacs except Elrog 300bs that died after a year. EML Mesh 45 globe, SP 45 Globe, GENUNIE WE 300b and WE 101d, PSVANE replicas too, Tak 300b, Kron PX4 and 25 and 242, Sylvania 6A3, 1920 Vintage Cunningham 345 and his new favourite EML Mesh 2a3.

Before the 2A3, he was clear that his recti order for top 3 was WE/Tak 274B tied for equal first, a decent drop to Kron 5u4g for 3rd and a big drop to the rest. After 2A3 burn in, the top 2 get equalled by cheap Chinese 274B and almost equal by the double Mica Mazda 5R4gy. Go figure!

For me, I dont have much of expensive new production rectis, but have 13 vintage and cheap ones. Shuguang 274b, Metal base Philips GZ34, Madza as above, Mullard GZ34 and GZ37 (skinny), 5Y3, 5z4, type 80, 1944 RCA 5r4gy, CEI double Mica 5r4gy, potato masher 5r4GWA and a few others.

My favourite is the Mazda and after that, the CEI and RCA 1944. The Shuguang is quite good too. A pal lent me his Kron 5u4g and it was superb. One of these days I will get one of those...but no rush as the Mazda is excellent.

Hi Norman

You seem to have nice pals :hey:

I agree the NOS WEs et al are the best and the Lampi/Kron 5U4G are the best of the recent production....

This is more of a curiosity question - Is there a point where tubes lose their luster / performance and should be replaced? Being these aren't used in the same fashion as a tube power amp these should last many years.

I have a Lite7 and leave it on almost 24/7. The 300b's I use are maybe 1.5yrs old but other than tube rolling, will there some indication its time?

Rectifiers burn at full volume weather you play of not it’s a good idea to turn them off or put in the a SS recti

Hi Swisstrips

You are right, the output tubes are only used very gently. They can last decades like that

And now for my curiosity:
What 300B tubes do you use?
Have you also tried some other tubes like KR 242 or KR PX25? Or the unobtainium EML 45 mesh anniversary globes?

@Al
The (initial) Lite7 doesn't have tube rectification. So nothing to worry here.

@Swisstrips
My experience so far with Lampi DACs is that they sound quite a lot better with tube rectification. If your Lite7 should have to go home to Poland, maybe you could ask Lukasz to incorporate tube rectification in your Lite7. That would be a worthwhile sonic upgrade ;)

I believe the L7 uses silicon for rectifiers, but regardless recall reading that Lukasz says just leave it on?

I have not tried much in the way of rolling, but had the globes and another set I don't recall at the moment, but currently using psvane 300b's. It sounds great as is but am all for rolling something else to try. Although $ is a consideration, especially after the recent purchases.

Tube recti is consideration, however I have been considering updating the clocks and getting the 512 engine (not r2r), but again $ is a factor and was curious as to some tubes to try that are reasonable $
