I think my Lampi Golden Atlantic Plus Dac’s rectifier died on me. Can’t find any same tube ( Kr Audio 5U4G) around. What would be the good alternative tube I can use ? Any recommendations?

Takatsuki 274B is the best. Parts Connexion is the place to get one. Elrogs are great but they have a history of blowing up in Lampis. My 300b did. I read that the failure rate is lower since new ownership.

Paul, back in my Lampi days, I tried a variety of rectifier tubs: WE 422a for me was the sleeper, the WE274b was the king. The Tak 274b was very good too. I have some other rare rectifier tubes that also worked out well (in the video I sent you last night).

The Tak’s are new and very very good sounding. You may want to even try the Tak 300b’s if your Lampi takes them.

i would have no hesitation using any elrog tube manufactured under the ownership of thomas mayer (new owner since 2016).

assuming compatibility with your lampi, i agree the tak 274b would also be a top choice. i have tak 300b tubes which are excellent in every way.

If you don't feel like breaking the bank, I just bought a Sophia Electric Aqua 274b and am very pleased with it in my Lampi.

The easiest thing for you might be to contact Chris's people at Parts Connexion there and see what all they have. They are listing at least the Elrog and Tak on their website and likely have other NOS 5UG's or even a 5AS4.

Thinking about the Tak too.. but its pricy LOL

So I have been in contact with Lampizator and KR audio by Facebook messenger. So we will see who can get me the best answer. However either way it will take a long time to receive so I was checking the local audio market and grabbed the Tung Sol 5U4GB USA NOS for now.

Now, the funny thing is I can NOT hear the difference vs expensive KR Audio ! Hmmm.... Am I deaf??? Wow.

So how much this rectifier affect the sounds on my DAC? Hmmm

I have this tube as well (based on some feedback from WTF) but my experience is exactly opposite. This is the worst tube in my collection of at least 10 different 5v rectifiers. They sounded worst than the stock Russian and unless my tube is defective, they sounded harsh and forward in B3. Some users also had the same feedback. I think Sophia no longer has the quality as it used to have once.

Hmmm interesting... I guess we hear all differently.

They don't make rectifiers like they use to and that applies to all of them and not just the 5AR4's which everybody knows. For other than the 5AR4's I have always stuck with the vintage rectifiers from Sylvania, Tung-Sol, RCA and even Raytheon. They will sound good and not just "shit the bed" like the new production stuff. There is a guy in Toronto on Ebay that has been selling since the 90's that has a pretty good haul of 5U4 variants.

The Tung-Sol's were the best of the 5U4's and the RCA's of the 5AS4's to me.

Jack. Thanks for the link. I didn't know about this seller. A lot of stuff

Also, that's good to hear about the Tung-Sol. Seriously I can NOT hear the difference. This wasn't expected

Jack. Now you got me curious. From your link, I like to buy some backups. What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

From what I see I would try to get one of the new RCA 5U4's, the new Raytheon and the new Phillips 5AS4 which was probably made in the Mullard tooled Matsushita plant. Those NOS rectifiers could likely outlast you and the Lampi. Since he is local to you might work out a meet instead of shipping across town.

I have a Lampi/KR Audio 5U4G I'm about to list for sale. Bought it in 2016 from Fred for use in my Big 7, but ended up preferring a U52 rectifier with my Tak 300B tubes in that DAC. Anyway, it has very little hours on it, so virtually brand new, and stored in original packaging in a closet for all these years. Let me know if you might be interested.

From what I've been told the Rectifier tubes can sound different depending on the mix of the other tubes in the Lampi DAC. It may also depend on associated gear and what one likes.

Last weekend I had some fun doing listening tests of rectifier tubes with my friend who has a Lampi, whatever the model used to be top before the Hrizon.

Neither of us liked the PSVane
RCA was pretty good but there was a loss of depth, like instruments were more on one plain of the sound stage.
EML was very good.
My favorite was a Kron, not meaning this a negative it leaned more solid state being very fast and giving up a bit of midrange lush, nice control. It just gave the music more excitement.
And, unfortunatly I don't know the tube he keeps in the DAC as reference, he calls it "Frankie" if that means anything, LOL
There were a couple others that weren't very noteworthy.
