    Gryphon News

Effective immediately, Gryphon has terminated their relationship with On A Higher Note (their US distributor).

This is disappointing news as OHN has been working tirelessly to promote the brand and provide excellent service and support to their dealer network.

OHN indicated previously Gryphon has long wanted dealers to have a much greater emphasis on selling Gryphon speakers. We had three of their speakers in the store and we will not bring in any more, ever again. The last thing we need is more speakers. This is not a worth while investment for us.

Suncoast Audio will therefore not be continuing with Gryphon Audio.

We wish all parties all the best in their future endeavors. We will happily be continuing working with OHN on many of their other brands, including Artesania.

OHN, thats Phil O’Hanlon yes? I only met Phil a couple times, he seemed to be a great ambassador for the brand. The whole inside baseball of audio distribution, relationships with manufacturers, prices, etc. sure seems to have its ups, downs, and rocky stretches.

Yes, that’s the one. He’s always supportive and “in the trenches” with the dealers.

Indeed, it always leaves one scratching their head.

    Mike,
That is not good news. Without knowing all that happened behind the scenes, I would say that, frankly, it is a foolish move on Gryphon’s part. Philip was doing a great job with the brand. I know that Gryphon speakers are not held in the same esteem as their electronics. What was your assessment when you had them in the store?
I wonder if they would go the same route as Luxman in the US.
In the end, a huge loss for you in terms of not carrying it anymore in your stable of top tier brands.

That is really a big surprise Gryphon News.

Gryphon going from hero to zero at Suncoast in a matter or minutes, is unexpected to say the least. But of course, if there is no joint business model collaboration does not make much sense.

I only have had limited exposure to Gryphon gear. A bit at Suncoast and before that in Singapore. The funny thing was in Singapore it seemed they highlighted the speakers rather than the electronics.

Greed? Not sure. Assessment was a struggle with the customers perceived value in the speakers. The Mojo S at $30k is really up there. We took a pair on trade and had to give them away at $6k after 16 months of collecting dust. They aren’t as good as a Harbeth 30XD TBH.

The bigger ones are ok, but not well known. Never had a single inquiry about them, none, zero, ziltch, so I wasn’t about to put a nickel into them again.

Speakers are often a “badge” people proudly wear.

    Re: Gryphon News

Well, that’s truly a shame. I know you did pretty darn good with the Diablos in particular, as well as amps. Guess the new team isn’t as committed as Flemming was to making it a go in the US. I mean, if there’s not a market for the speakers (since it doesn’t seem they are all that, from what I’ve heard) then just deal with it and keep going with the electronics. Sorry Mike.

I’m sorry Mike. I know how much effort Phil and you put into that brand. Their amps are truly superb. I don’t know what the senior management is thinking over at Gryphon.

    Gryphon News

Hmm, I can’t sell my speakers in the US, so let’s stop selling amps altogether as well.

I haven’t been in the hobby that long, maybe 10-11 years, but only in the last 2-3 years I started noticing Gryphon is making a name in the US. Must mean the distributor and dealers like Mike are doing something right.

A shame really as I love my Diablo very much.

Most Distributors are not savvy business people. In this case I am unsure if OHN's agreement simply ran out with them and wasn't renewed, or if they even had any sort of written agreement with them. I assume they did, and they should have protected themselves better considering that this already happened to them once. Hopefully they made A LOT of money while it lasted and will now learn and move on... again.

I for one, hope that retail drops by 25% or more, always thought of them as being a bit too rich here. This absolutely sucks for those who bought into them, whether they love them or not.

Disappointing news. I expect their dealer network will decrease significantly. I like their electronics but their speakers not so much.

I dont think that any of us have enough information to agree or disagree with you about your particular experience.

My first phone call would be to the Dealer I bought it from. After that I would go the the Manufacturer.

I don't know the man, so I can't speak to his character, or lack thereof, but I do believe that he pretty much put Gryphon on the map in the USA. Before he became their distributor, they were all but invisible here.

And I agree: the poor treatment you received as a customer was inexcusable.

Prior to OHN, Gryphon had withdrawn from the US market for more than 10 years (if memory serves) except for making arrangements to have US-owned units serviced. Due to their international reputation (and following the introduction of the Diablo 300), there were many here who wanted to see them re-establish distribution in the US. It looks like this will continue through a Gryphon owned NA distribution subsidiary, similar to the Luxman model, with goals/dealer terms different from OHN.
Three people whom I respect know Philip O'Hanlon well and speak highly of him.

So sad, I had the Gryphon Essence Stereo on my list for possible end stage amp in my system. I guess I’ll see where my DIY takes me. VFet, and SIT amplifiers a possibility this year. Unsure if class AB amps will be a decent competition. I have sensitive speakers, and a small room.

I don't believe that there is anything "sad" about this. This is a great opportunity for Gryphon to come into a Country that is already familiar with their offerings, lower their prices and sell a boatload. Great for everyone... moving forward that is.

Gryphon is already here and their distributor, On a Higher Note (Phil), and dealer, Suncoast Audio (Mike), did an outstanding job reestablishing the brand here in the USA. They have now jettisoned this successful approach in favor of selling directly to a few dealers who will attempt to sell their speakers as well as their components.

    Re: Gryphon News

There is no room for hurt feelings in Business, you either protect yourself as best as you can or you simply hope for the best. I will say this again, the majority of audio distributors in Canada and the US are not business savvy. Hopefully they made good money and will now move on again, they certainly made plenty with Luxman.

It may be a little too early to say but I am under the impression the Gryphon is establishing Gryphon USA. Meaning they will have people on the ground here with at least a warehouse in the US. This is significantly different than simply shipping items directly to Dealers from overseas. I am confident that any current Dealers who wish to continue on with Gryphon USA will have that opportunity. If most Dealers refuse to carry or sell their speakers then they will either be unsuccessful with the brand or Gryphon will have to reinvent their offerings, its all really very simple.

It may be a little too early to say but I am under the impression the Gryphon is establishing Gryphon USA. Meaning they will have people on the ground here with at least a warehouse in the US. This is significantly different than simply shipping items directly to Dealers from overseas. “An invested dealer is a committed dealer.”

It’s a bigger discussion around the whole perception of “all of our stuff is the best, everyone else’s is junk.”

If I owned a golf store, I would sell Nike shoes, but I sure wouldn’t sell Nike golf clubs.

Lots of electronics offerings in “Tier 1” for dealers. And if you think the products that sell, sell by themselves, let me introduce you to a good dealer.

To exemplify this, you only need to look at the numerous fabulous products hoarded by one distributor who has no dealer network and no intention of building one. These products will continue to fly under the radar or at a minimum, be under represented. A dealer of one in a country the size of America does not make a brand.

Agreed. Wish them best of luck. Love their electronics and I hope they are successful as another departure from America would not be a good thing.

    Re: Gryphon News

Well said and understood Mike, but I think we're getting a bit off topic.

If Gryphon believes that their products, ALL OF THEM, are superior to everyone elses then they will simply not survive as a Company, atleast not here. Unless of course, all of a sudden, their speakers start flying off the shelves and everyone else was wrong. I also don't believe that their intention is to sell direct as you alluded to another "Distributor". Lets see if they have success either maintaining their current or establishing a new solid Dealer base on their own. Time will tell, but I'm confident if their pricing drops by 20-30% then they will quickly find Dealers to bring in 3 speakers all the while selling 5-10 components a month, the speakers can sit and collect dust.

Usually when a manufacturer goes from a distributor to in house distribution here in North America, prices do not go down. They can't have a sales force, storage etc any cheaper and in some cases costs them more since they don't have other lines to share costs with.

They gain control. Almost never a cost savings, and never to the end consumer.

Remains to be seen with Gryphon (ref Mike's comment above), but it does happen, e.g., Luxman several years ago, where their top line products were reduced 25% when they brought U.S. distribution 'in-house.'

For about a year, then the prices started to creep up. I highly doubt Gryphon will have the volume to be able to bring prices down.

    Gryphon News

It remains to be seen what happens.

But my guestimate is that the decision was made in hubris: Taking over at a stage where others have put in years of work, and overestimating the company’s own capabilities due to assigning the good situation mainly to brand strength. And then things start to go south from there.

Someone needs to do the legwork Gryphon News.

This is very different from Luxman in my opinion. Luxman is a much larger company with a more diverse product line from entry level to high end. Gryphon is small and uber-high end to begin with. Their starting stereo amplifier is $23k and speaker $30k (a monitor).

I wish them luck. I heard the $150k(?) Trident at the distributors a few months ago - it was fine but I didn't feel special for its price point. And at that price point it needs to blow people away. My good friend has a pair of Pendragons (a completely different and now discontinued concept) that hopefully will finally be ready to hear end of this year in his reconstructed house.

At their core is an electronics company so its an interesting decision they've made.

My comment on Luxman was not meant to imply that I expected Gryphon to cut prices when bringing their NA distribution in house - only that pricing could go either way with such a move depending on the company and their objectives. Luxman was trying to reduce expenses to improve their price competitiveness in a lower market segment. Gryphon apparently wants to compel more emphasis on their speaker line in NA.

I think that They don't. Few years ago their portfolio contained Modulari Primo i Modulari Duo, but in the archived products section they didn't even mention about them.

    Gryphon News

I understand some went up a little and some went down a little. Perhaps someone can confirm the price of the Diablo 300 for example. It was $16K.

George - I agree. It will be interesting to see if dealers who were “all in, lock, stock and barrel”, with Gryphon Speakers, Gryphon racks, multiple lines of Gryphon cables, etc. stay on.
