Re: Jeff Fritz on Magico Vs Revel

Great teaser for a review of the A5. The midrange in that A5 is really something. All the top Magico drivers are amazing. Alon did a little presentation when we were there on Thursday. He put a competitors 6 inch driver on a metal table, then one of the Magico same size driver with monster neodymium magnet & voice coil. Then I was asked to lift the driver off the table. The competitors driver (used in the brand of speaker I have owned!) was a relatively easy lift. Lifting the Magico driver — well lets say I lifted the whole damn table. Getting the magnet off required some twisting and rolling efforts. Damn!

Then he mentioned one cost $60, the other $800. You decide ;-)

Will be very interesting to read the continuation! I've had Salon2's for several years and another Revel model before that. Not perfect but love them. Magico has always been on my radar but despite having heard them several times in different settings, I was never privy to a proper audition with real music at real SPL's so have no feel for their character.

Now if the A5's just looked as good as the Salon2's! I guess they'd cost 40K then... Sure wish Revel would work on a new reference loudspeaker though at last check it wasn't in the queue.

Re: Jeff Fritz on Magico Vs Revel

Has anyone heard both? It would be an interesting shoot out. I do like the Magico sound.

I have yet to hear the Revel 328b but I have not been overly impressed with their new direction in sound.

I assume that means you've heard both to have such a strong position?

Totally agree with this. I know the A series is supposed to be entry level, machined outside of Magico facilities to save cost, etc. Still for 22k usd the A5 is not a cheap speaker, and cabinet diffraction is still there nonetheless. Should have costed a little more and rounded these edges...

Well, yes I have. I've owned Salon 2's on two different occasions. I've listened to the A5's too. I've spent time with a few different Magico models. S3,S5,M1,M2.

I just recently spent time at Mike's place listening to the M2,and comparing it with the Kharma DB9 S.

And I stand by what I said.

IMO the Vivids would trounce the M series as well.

While i can and do agree regarding edge treatment for diffraction , cabinet diffraction is affected by the whole cabinet not just the edge , that is the width to depth ratio affects how the energy is dissipated and hence its overall effect..

I think it would be an interesting compare. I heard the M3s several times (both times with T+A monoblock amps) and they were quite good, in fact excellent. When I compared them to my home system which, at the time had Wells Audio amps, I liked what the Magicos did more. Not leaps and bounds better but still better. However, audio memory being what it is, and now with my Audionet Max amps it would be a much closer compare and you might be right, that the Vivids win. FWIW I wouldn't sell my Giyas for M3s but I would for the M6s. But then there's the Vivid Spirits also so...

    Hi Mark,

What’s more interesting to me is, after listening to the Magico M2 and Kharma DB9 Signature, you chose the Kharma DB9 Signature. Was that more due to sound quality or price? And if it was primarily due to sound quality, what characteristics did you prefer about the DB9 Signature over the M2?

    Thanks,
    Ken
