The Smith Chart and...Power Cords

He’s actually clear headed and very comfortable with his purchases. While you and I may not spend that kind of coin on cables, I don’t necessarily think that makes us smarter. It’s his money.

Yep, I have a TLA I personally use....MFB: Male Fighting Behavior.

FWIW, I see the same exact behavior in any internet forum that is predominantly all-male: sports cars, sport bikes, digital cameras, as well as audio. Doesn't matter what the "subject" or topic is, I see the same exact behavior. By contrast, you never see women behaving this way on-line.

I'm going to update my thoughts on this after reading comments about "more money than sense" to include the additional motive of jealousy. I think when people are jealous of what others have or spend money on, they result to personal attacks.

I think you are correct. I posted a top off picture of the 3060 and was disappointed at the stupid comments posted, doubting the true power, who needs that much, more money than sense etc. I expected more appreciation for the monument it is.

When it comes down to it what skin is it off anyone's neck if someone buys power cords and how much they spend. Just keep your opinions to your self. First of all we're not going to listen and no one asked to be saved. If a person didn't deem a power cord or whatever a value to them they wouldn't buy it and it's no one's business if they do.

This discussion has been interesting. I know a fellow audiophile who has purchased a handful of Odin Gold Power cables. They list for $34,999 for 1.25 meters. Bet we know how he feels about the importance of power cables. In total, he has more money sunk in Nordost cables than I have in my entire system.

For man-jewelry we used to be kind of limited to just watches. But now that we have audio bling on our side the sky’s the limit. If only Patek Philippe made stereo gear. Then we’d really be in clover.

Audio Bling been around forever ...!!!

Powercords are more important to your amplifier sound than speaker cables, you are virtually listening to your PSU modulation in amplifiers, class D are the worse for this and PC make the biggest difference on them i have experienced ...

Regards

PS: wait until you change out those cheaply built stock fuses :)

I wish D'Agostino would make a Watch

I've gotten to a "phiiosophical place" about folks' comments, and as such, have adopted a Stoic tenet espoused by Marcus Aurelius: “Tranquility…comes when you stop caring what they say. Or think, or do. Only what you...do."

No argument, it's his money. What I'm chuckling over right now is that you posted it, I commented on it(this is a discussion/opinion topic as you know) and a handful of the 'regulars' have come out their closets to harp ! LMAO !!

Agreed. Although it's entertaining to watch them, you really do have to feel sad for those people. I've certainly made mistakes in the past engaging people like that, but Imagine the life the ones who do it continually must lead to be like that on forums?

As I was reading the review of the JMF Audio monoblocks I saw some info worth sharing.

"JMF Audio's early adopters included René Zingg's Soundville Studios in Lucerne, Switzerland, and Glenn Meadows's Masterfonics Studios in Nashville. Both studios were designed by Tom Hidley. More recently, Morten Lindberg of Grammy-winning label 2L began using JMF Audio's PCD 302 mains filter and power cords to make his recordings. JMF's consumer distribution was limited to Asia until Vamos's Audio Skies introduced JMF Audio electronics to North America at"

2L makes some of the finest recordings in the world. Appparently power cords matter when you want the best.

I have always heard that the plugs were the most important aspect of any cable. Although JMF chose a different approach they do address the issue of needing a better than your average power cord.

To ensure that the HQS 7001 meets the ambitious specifications the company touts, even with noisy power, a filtered, hard-wired power cable is included. One filter is inside the plug; the other sits at the entrance to the amplifier. "Our experience is that an ordinary IEC connector is too weak for the task," Fusilier said. "When you have connectors inside the amp, outside the amp, and on the cable, current must run through three different connectors. Connectors are always the weakest link. By hard-wiring the power cable, the weak points are eliminated."

Beyond the power cord, the amps are designed to reject noise. "Our balanced interfaces are hand-calibrated for great interference rejection. This results in a common-mode rejection as high as 100dB, while professional interfaces usually show less than 65dB."

Given the opportunity, I wanted to pivot into one particular direction, specifically towards what high frequency radiation can look like...

So, in the simplest case, the following frame is from a facebook video (which I cannot find on youtube and link), showing a hand-held VHF radio exciting a fluorescent light which is not connected to anything:

Screenshot 2024-02-12 at 1.15.37 PM.png

The following two videos showcase HF noise on the power line - one from fluorescent lights, the other LEDs - and they are both using a probe going into a spectrum analyzer: in one case, the probe is simply touched by a human to show how this noise (~40KHz) is radiated all around and picked up by anything worth conducting (including the power line where the spectrum analyzer is plugged in); the other is attached to the insulation of the power line feeding the LED lights, which indicates that noise is on the power line and it can penetrate the insulation. There are tons of such videos on youtube, these ones just popped up top with a quick search. Also notice the inline filter recommended for the LED lights and its effect (the filter also shunts Line to Neutral using capacitors etc)

Have fun
