An interesting experience with speaker cables

Have a fascinating experience to share. After my dog destroyed one of my Magico S3 mk2 bass drivers (literally ripped it off - had to buy a whole new driver from the US and have it installed for SG$3k) she most recently decided my MIT SL-Matrix 70 (SG$7.5k) speaker cable was steak. I skipped the anger and denial stages of grieving and went straight to depression. After 4 weeks of no music I decided to find some cheaper cables. Found a family-owned specialist cable company in Singapore - the father was an engineer for Canare cables back in the day, set up his own retail shop, and sells them, but orders custom-modified. I wanted to but some “decent” cables such that if my terrorist dog ate them again, I would not go bankrupt. So, here is the rub: got their best cables with furutech connectors and an additional coating to hopefully mitigate the jowls of my dog. All for… wait for it…. US$500. 2x 3 metres. Inspected the build quality and it is all copper with each cable comprising 4 x separately insulated wires. 50 hours in and they were awful: muddy. Am 80 hours in now. Recommended burn in is 100 hours. MIT’s sounded better but… not by much tbh at the 80 hour mark. Go figure!

That had to be a difficult period with no music. Those small family cables sound like a deal and a half. I think I'd be sending Fluffy to the dog house outside. :)

Oh man, Zena was on death row after the speaker terrorist attack!

Trying to upload photos of the destruction but asks for a URL and not sure how to do that

Thanks Joe. Rod and back spring to mind! All good. At least I got to inspect the Magico driver in detail. A few surface scratches but pleased to report it is dog-proof

I have used the metal grills that came with my S3 MkIIs as grandchild/house cleaner protectors when I'm not listening or potential 'threats' are about. The magnetic fasteners are perfect for this application since they don't show wear with repeated use.

I like the grills off and paid a big price. They are on now!

Sorry to hear about the troubles. To upload a file from the PC one needs to select the 'Go Advanced' option on the bottom right and then there will be an icom with a paper clip to attach a picture from your PC.

Sorry about the terrorism at home. Glad things are almost back to normal.

Same with the S5. I take the grills off when listening, and put them on when finished. I had four cats at one point and if they got close and looked at the speakers I would go into berserk mode and make them move. After that they would ignore the speakers even when sitting right in front of them while playing music.

Wow, I can't even imagine the emotions if I had something like that happen to my speakers.

$500 to $7500 is quite a value ratio. It would be interesting to be able to side by side compare to your model MIT. The MIT, or any cable, would have to be a good measure better to justify the cost difference.

Absolutely I need to do a test. Looking forward to it. Does anyone know Canare cables? Understand they are (or were originally) Japanese but that they are in the US also.

ive been using Canare for years along with Mogami, both pro audio cables made in Japan. FWIW Magico internally wires their speakers with Canare 4S11

Thanks for this! I need to do a blind test and it has been more than a month since I listened to my system with my MITs but am astounded at the quality of sound these US$500 cables are producing. Full soundstage. Bass is perhaps a little lacking but only 90 hours in.

Let’s see.

Some context is needed. Canare is the cable manufacturer. The Singapore retailer orders and also custom designs (my cables apparently are weighted slightly more to mid and high ranges). My retailer buys in bulk and sells to AV companies, so some scale. And they do not sell the “brand” so no brand premium. Can’t wait to see how they stand up against the MITs!

Be careful, if something bad happens to the dog by eating the components of its system, it may be reported for animal abuse. “Poor doggy"
