Did you ride today?
I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to the days ride. How many miles did you do, how was the weather, how many dogs chased you, how many bars you stopped at, etc... I get motivation from all of you out there riding in all types of weather. It makes me get off my bum, strap on my helmet and get peddling.
Today started out as cold and overcast. It cleared up about 2:00 and became very humid. After an hour or so, the wind came in and made things downright perfect for a ride. I did a quick little out and back of 17.5 miles. Half paved roads and half dirt roads. I like riding dirt roads and this time of year is perfect for it with the rain making things hard and fast. Towards the middle of summer I throw on some 28's and ride mostly concrete due to the dry, dusty, sandy factor. For now though it's a little heaven on earth.
So what about you. Did you ride today?Doug

Outside on weekends, trainer indoors every AM before work, good for controlled intervals. Also the only time I listen to my old klipsch! Relaxes me for the grinding day ahead...

Re: Did you ride today?
Just got back from my ride. Garmin didn't work about 40% of the ride. Maybe the rain from the other day. I'm guessing I did about 35-40 miles.
Helped a fellow cyclist who had 2 flats! He fixed his tires, but used up all his C02 tubes on one tire, so the front was pretty flat. Portable hand pump to the rescue! (I love my GatorSkin tires!)

Re: Did you ride today?
Did a Quebec sanctionned race this weekend in the Charlevoix region (very hilly), 15.8k TT on Saturday morning, 12.7k hill climb on Saturday afternoon (the last 5k was the climb with a max 24% incline), 76k road race on Sunday (very hilly with short steep inclines, many in the 15-20% range). Finished it off! I DFL'd (dead fuc..ng last) although technically I did not considering 6 abandonned out of a peloton of 36 in my age category (50-59). It was carnage in the younger age group with over 40% who abandonned in some categories. The route was partly to blame but also the weather, 7 degrees celcius with rain which started after we had left.
It was epic!

Re: Did you ride today?
I was out of town over the weekend and when I got back yesterday I had some new toys to play with. It was beautiful today, other than some wind, so I went out and put in 21 miles. I actually felt really good and now I see that you guys put the hurt on me miles wise. I need to step it up a notch.

Congrats, Etunes!
24%?! That's brutal! As Doug says, congrats on showing the young bucks who's boss!
Went for a ride on Sunday, too, about 35 flat miles. Almost got tapped by a car that didn't see me stopped at a red light! Grrrr! Stay safe, guys!
Doug, with your new TT, I don't expect you to be leaving your house any time soon!

Re: Did you ride today?
John or Allen, do you use a mount like this for your Garmin? I'm wondering if it works better than the stem mount. I like the idea of it being off the front.

Re: Did you ride today?
Drivers are so distracted these days it's a wonder more riders aren't hit. I was riding along a straight stretch of road in the middle of the day about three feet right of the solid white line and almost got clipped by someone. There was nobody else on the road. He didn't even get over one inch and was actually riding right down the solid white line!!!
Summers in MI are short, and the winters seem to get longer every year. You learn to get out and do stuff while you can. The 'table will be there to keep me warm when the snow is flying again!Doug

Looks absolutely miserable. One of those rides that you're happy to be done with but at the same time so satisfying to have done. Love the SuperSix.

Re: Did you ride today?
Allen, it does the job but not as well as aluminium. You get used to it though. Most guys in a race are using them so we all stop evenly and second they squeal when breaking so you can hear the guys in front of you when he's stopping. Remember in heavy rain you don't see much in the peloton except for rain and overspray!

33k's in the rain in a warm balmy 13C, avg of 28k's. Out with the kids (12-16 years old) from a youth bike club. Turnout was low with 4 kids and 4 adults .
There is a rumour there is a big red thing in the sky sometimes, anybody knows what it is ? Don' recall seing it!

I don't like to run - I get shin splints.
Went for a 'hilly' ride today, well, hilly for my neck of the woods. About 1500 feet elevation gain in about 12 miles. I am such a hill slug!

Re: Did you ride today?
In the famous word of a certain Fabian Cancellara "It ain't pretty but I get up there", I go through a thousand death when I climb. Not much in terms of hills in the city where I live except for a 500 feet vertical. Interesting to note that most of the races I get involved in have a lot of climbs, masochistic you say!

I spent the better part of the day yesterday helping my wife and a friend with their garage sale. I didn't do a whole lot but I was exhausted at the end. I hope to get out today before the rain comes.

Re: Did you ride today?
Just got back from a nice 18 mi. ride. It was overcast but beautiful out there with hardly a car in sight until the road back into town. I was passed by about 40 old muscle cars and it was like I was back in the city commuting with all of the nasty old exhaust from them. I did see a few deer, a couple doe's with tiny fawns too. One must have only been about a foot tall. I did have a nice chat with a squirrel as it ran along side of me for about 50 feet. I slowed down so it could get across the road in front of me without trying to go through my spokes!
Here's a shot of a gravel road I was riding...
Here is where I go to pick some of the best Blueberries around...
and here are some Cherry trees just getting the fruit on them...

Re: Did you ride today?
Nice shots, Doug. I was tempted to take a shot of a lone cyclist about 1/4 of a mile away from me going down a clear road with farms on either side of him. It was like one of those shots you see in cycling books.
It was a gorgeous day today, started out in the mid-60s, sun through some whispery clouds so it wasn't beating down on me which was nice. Rode 46-47 miles (Garmin on the blink again), my longest ride thus far this season. Many cyclists on the road today here - recreational, enthusiasts, etc. It was great to see!

Re: Did you ride today?
Nice riding Allen. When your new Garmin arrives you'll have one less thing to worry about. I would love to get into the 40-50 mile range. Right now I try to do between 20-30 and that works pretty good for me. Once you get up around 30 another ten doesn't seem like a lot, but it's a time factor with me. I have it in my mind that if I'm out on my bike for that long enjoying myself that there's other things that I should be doing instead. Oh the guilt factor!

Re: Did you ride today?
I hear ya, Doug, on the time commitment. My family's weekend life revolves around my cycling schedule, and I do feel guilty about that. And it's not just the cycling time, but the inevitable nap afterwards, too! Luckily the rest of my family tend to wake up late so I'm usually back when they are just getting up, LOL!
If you an do 20-30, you'll be able to do 40-50. It's more will than anything else.

Re: Did you ride today?
60k group ride over 2 hours with 3 buddies, ended up pulling the whole distance. Interestingly it was sunny today, don't remember how to ride in the dry! One of the guys in the group is in his early 70's, can still hold a wheel up to 40 kph if it's flat and no slinky's. Always tell him I want to ride like him when I hit his age!
Doug, you can do 40-50 miles on a ride when you can do 30. It's just a matter of pacing yourself, hydration and food. Try it on a good day with plenty of water and food, you can do it!Last edited by RedSectorA; June 9, 2013 at 09:58 PM.
