    Wilson Alexia's

If there was ever a definitive argument for keeping the Alexia's, it was last night. Mc275's with a superb cocktail of NOS tubes, my heavily modified VAC preamp and the new Lumin S1. I'm not sure I've ever heard better sound in my room.

I still really want to play with low powered SET & OTL amps and some unique speaker designs, but oh my....the combo was sooooooooo sweet.

You're right Mike. Just the right blend of bass punch, resolution, richness, sweetness and midrange bloom. I think if I had spun some vinyl with the ARC REF2SE, the ad would have come down!

I feel like buying the Strads and doing an in room shootout and keeping the winner (for my room). But I'm trying to hold off on doing that until I get my Spatials. For now, let's just say, things happen for a reason. The pair of Strads on Audiogon I'm eyeing is still there and I'm rediscovering the Alexia's with a superb tube combination. With a slight tweak on the 275's V3 and V5 tubes, I think I can dial them in perfectly.

Are you still using the Black Hole to help tame the room nodes? If so do you are Clayton think a second would help further.

Paul - the V3/V5 are the tubes that handle bass on the MC275's. With the Tesla tubes, I'm getting SS type bass. I may try to lighten that up a bit - FOR MY ROOM - with some Mullards or something.

Mark - when I spoke with Nikolay at Tube Maze, he told me on the 275 VI, the V3 and V5 tubes have the most impact on bass - and that's where to put the expensive Tesla E83CC tubes. Nikolay uses the 275's as his reference amps ("great amps with shit stock tubes"). He's tried every possible combination you could imagine. He said the Tesla tubes have strong, punchy, deep bass and need to be in V3/V5.

Are you aware of something different? I tried researching it and there was a lot of conflicting information. I'm going to confirm with him just to be sure.

Yes....it cuts the ringing in half. It won't "fix" a bass node....but it will help cut the time it rings.

I'm not sure if two would help. Maybe.

Mike-I have never heard that before with regards to small signal tubes being the ones that affect bass quality in a tube amp. Assuming a tube amp is a wide bandwidth design, the number one component that affects the bass quality in all parameters is the output transformer. Second after that IMO would be the output tubes themselves. Switching from anybody's KT-88 to a real NOS Genelex KT-88 is a real ear opener with regards to added bass extension. But now with the KT-120/KT-150 tubes, we just might have some new bass champions.
