    Vitus SCD-025 inbound!

    Hi folks,

I got some very exciting news from my Dealer last night. My new SCD-025 is in final testing and due to ship in the next week! Moreover, I had a chat to Hans about how my player was going. Well it turns out that my player has benefited from a significant upgrade to last year's spec and includes a new, upgradeable master clock, new I/V converter, new analogue modules etc and is basically a whole new beast. Hans said my player is in a "totally different league...almost at the point where I could live without my analog rig" compared to the player that Chris Thomas last year described as "the best single-box CD player/DAC that I have heard to date".

I asked Hans about the size of the improvement and he told me "..about 50% i would say. The finesse is just so much better, it is like listening to a techdas airforce one with thales tonearm and dynavector x1s cartridge linket to our masterpiece phono. It was quite scary to be honest as I have publicly claimed digital will never get close to analog.. it would seem I am proving myself wrong - lol".

I certainly didn't expect this huge upgrade, so I am really excited!! I'm looking forward to updating this thread with some pics and my first impressions when I have the player installed in my system .

    Cheers,
    Bodhi

Nice, I still desire a great spinner and having DAC inputs is a bonus.

Joe, I know that Hans team also spent quite a long time developing the DSD USB board, even delaying its release until it satisfied their design goals. According to VA, the USB board does DSD/DxD/DoP. It will bypass all the receiver and SRC part and send the DSD signal directly to the DACs.

Nice David. I really like the idea of the stillpoints (or similar) under digital devices. I've had good luck with the Ansuz Darkz under my Lumin. I would love to try the Nordost Sort Cones. Their demo at RMAF is always quite convincing.

Mike, there are definitely a myriad of options to isolate your gear. Half the fun is experimenting with different devices! I've used Wally/Harmonix feet, Alto Extremo, Finite Elemente & Stillpoints, but hands down Stillpoints have been the most effective. One thing's for sure, i'll be far from slumming it with Ultra 5's doing duty!

David - are you going Ultra 5's or 6's? I just added Ultra SS's to my Scala V2's and it tightened the bass right up. But, truth be told, I never tried the stock spikes - I had them on their shipping wheels while breaking in.

This player will work great with three Ultra 6's one under transport the other two in the back. We design the Ultra 6 to be optimized for electronics. Our Ultra 5 is still the best for Loudspeakers. If you have not experienced the new 6 it is stunning!
We are just releasing a new Piano ultra ,which we will measure the increase in harmonics when applied to the piano. Should be able to show you some interesting graphs.

Great to see you chime in. Is that Bruce? I agree that 3 Ultra 6's are a good option for a transport being a perfect plane, though I have a hunch that 4 U6's + Ultra bases might pip 3 U6's. Definitely a wise investment .

Hi folks, my Dealer is coming over tommorow with a dozen Stillpoints Ultra 6's & a couple more Akiko Universal sticks for the 2nd run of my Jorma Statement cables. He is also sticking around to help me set up my system. For now, we decided to set up my S5's with the factory spikes so I can properly a-b compare the U5's + Ultra bases later & decide which is better. First impressions & photos to follow soon!...

Thanks Allen I'll try to constrain my comments in this thread to my new Vitus player, though I think it's time I posted my system thread. I might also post separate threads on my Stillpoints experiment & Jorma cables .

    Vitus Audio SCD-025 DAC/CD player
I looked in interest at a 3 year old Vitus Audio SCD-025.Read up on the modular design for future upgrades before parting with my money only to hear the latest Vitus Audio SCD-025 is 30% better and has been totally revamped redesign main board and USB board to support DSD.Plus a colour change to Champagne !!
I find it a bit misleading regarding modular design for future upgrades and still calling it the Vitus Audio SCD-025.......

Since I need a CD player AND a good DAC, I am considering this VITUS, but also the ESOTERIC K-01x & TAD D-1000.

anyone know how they compare ( as CD player but also as USB DAC) ? I heard VITUS and ESOTERIC have different sound !?

    thanks

CD Only. This is a real negative from my perspective.

Vitus is CD only and not in the same league as the T+A or Esoteric IMO.

Well... I finally bought the VITUS SCD-025. I find if much more "musical" than Esoteric K-01x, dCS Rossini & DAVE that I also listened to with my BHSE/STAX electrostatic headphone system. Only the NAGRA HD DAC brought the same enjoyment in my music...for twice the price. All the other TOL DAC sounded to analytic with not enough "soul".

Just one question: I find that listening to the ripped CD through my "USB Server->USB->VITUS used as DAC" sounded better than reading the actual CD in the VITUS !? is it normal ?

    Re: Vitus SCD-025 inbound!

    @bmichels
I also not long ago got my vitus SCD 025.
    Love it's Dac.
I also end up using the vitus SCD 025 Dac more then CD player.
But I still say the CD sound has got better precision and control than sound from HDD.
    My system
HDD connected to Cambridge Audio CXU through USB and from there through COAX to Vitus SCD 025 Dac.
I also have Vitus RD 100.
And I have compared Vitus Rd 100 with
    Chord Dave,
    Allnic 5000(I think)

    And lampizator 4.
I didn't feel the need to change then.
And my Vitus SCD 025 is definitely better than RD100.
I am a happy camper and hope you enjoy new toy too.

Congrats bmichels, glad you're enjoying its musicality! The asynchronous USB most likely sounds better than the CD transport due to lower jitter. Having a high quality music server and USB cable also augment USB performance. I wouldn't consider this to be unusual.

Big congrats bmichels on choosing the Vitus SCD-025Mk2! I've had some long discussions with you about that and other players over a long period of time, and I think in the end you've arrived at the right decision. It also seems like your musical tastes are similar to mine.

Please understand, you have a killer cd player there with one of the best transports i've ever seen. And although the Vitus has an excellent transport and very solid chassis, cd playback is generally more vulnerable to the deleterious effects of resonance than are rips fed from a server. And your player is currently sitting on your side cabinet on the factory feet, so my advice is before critically evaluating your player's cd playback, install a set of 3 Stillpoints Ultra feet (Ultra SS or Ultra 6's with Ultra bases) & run the PAD Luminist conditioning cd to assist with the run in process. Vitus recommends about 300hrs to fully run in the player. Then compare playing some nice discs like XRCD24, DXD or Mofi Gold .

Has anyone compared the SCD-025 Mk2 to the RCD-101 or the PS Audio DirectStream an can share his/her thoughts? I bought the SIA-025 last week and need an adequate player.

Hi all together, I enjoy reading in your forum.

    @Diasoft
Last Weekend I had the chance to listen SIA 025 + SS 025 + SCD 025 + Gauder RC 8 versus PS Audio DirectStream + SIA 025. For me the pure VA combination with the SCD 025 wins the contest by far. The VA combination sounds more natural with more "life".

I also compared the VA Dac with Audionet's DNP. Last one was much more (too) analytic for me. In my view the DAC of VA is a very good choice.

I'm familiar with both the RCD-101 and SCD-025 Mk2, though I haven't done a sbs comparison. The RCD-101 has the essential Vitus DNA of sounding organic, analogue-like and non-fatiguing, though hands down the SCD-025 Mk2 is more fluid, resolving and musical compared to the RCD-101. I would say it is also more analogue-like, especially so when paired with the SIA-025. No surprise there really since the SCD-025 Mk2 was "made for" the SIA-025. I don't think PS Audio is in the same league, though to be fair I haven't heard their gear.

Great choice Diasoft, especially for synergy with your SIA-025 & Gauder RC-7 MkII's . Give it time to play in. Hans Ole advised me a minimum of 200hrs to be mostly run in.

Looking forward to your first impressions, then further reflections when your new toy is fully run in!

That player uses a heavily modified Phillips Pro 2LF transport. Hans provided this insight in High Fidelity magazine's review of the SCD-025 Mk2, which he also confirmed in my discussions with him..

Do you believe in Compact Disc format still? What is its the future?
No – its dead – but there are many customers who have good collections of discs and who will continue to support it for as long as they possible can – and so we try our best to support them. Main issue is that the quality of the drives that are available is getting worse and worse, and for that reason many start to use PC cd-r drives. We have enough Philips pro drives for the time being to last production and service for the time being – and we will continue to supply SCD-025's for as long as we can still keeping a reasonable stock for repairs.

Aren't you afraid of lack Philips' transports on the market?
Yes and no – we have plenty for now

Well, the SCD 025 is here and I love it. Now I need a great XLR cable. I have Magnan Vi, Acoustic Zen Silver Reference II and Aural Symphonics chronos b2. The Aural is the best cable. It is very airy but also thin. I would like more warmth and more bass.

    Re: Vitus SCD-025 inbound!

Congratulations Diasoft & great choice! Remember your SCD-025 Mk2 will need about 300hrs to be fully run in. If you're looking for a warm sounding xlr cable with prominent bass, i'd try to audition Siltech Royal Signature or Crown series cables. The latest PAD Anniversary cables are also very good. I would recommend Jorma Prime (which I think are excellent), but they are what I call "well balanced" cables and may not give you enough bass. They tick the warmth box however.
