They are talking getting close in sales dollars not units. The inflated price for vinyl accounts for some of that. In the end physical media is dying faster than the boomer generation will be able to support

I just need it to last 5/10 years to build a vinyl collection - then I’m self contained until a component or speaker blows up

I think you’re safe. It’s outlasted a lot of other formats.

I don't agree with the statement or your sentiment. Now if this sentence said "In the end, physical digital media is dying" it would be much closer to the truth. Streaming isn't the future of digital audio, it's already taken over. LPs are still going strong and LP pressing plants are at full capacity. The amount of new tables, arms, and cartridges for sale is mind boggling. Ditto for phono stages.
Micro Seiki SX-8000 air bearing table, SME 312s arm, SME 3012R arn, Dynavector XV-1s cartridge, Lyra Etna SL cartridge, ARC Ref 3 phono stage, Otari MX-55 2 track R2R, Ampex 350 tape repros, Roon Nucleus Plus music server, HiFi Rose 150B DAC, ARC Ref 6, ARC Ref 75 with KT-150s, Parasound JC5 amp , JBL 4345 speakers, Viero Equilibro Level 3 speaker cables, and Definitive Technology Ref subs.

    Fake news??
Vinyl records earned $224.1 million (on 8.6 million units) in the first half of 2019, closing in on the $247.9 million (on 18.6 million units) generated by CD sales

Re: Vinyl Is Poised to Outsell CDs For the First Time Since 1986

So CDs are still outselling vinyl more than 2 to 1. Probably not including SACD sales (maybe not a large number but certainly they still sell). Also not accounting for digital downloads which, with no numbers to support, I would say are a fairly decent number... HD Tracks, Acoustic Sounds, Native DSD, Blue Coast Records, High Res Audio, just to name a few.

In my case the number is very close. Of the 971 albums on my music server 497 are ripped from silver disks (289 CD Rips, 208 SACD Rips) and 474 digital downloads (184 DSD downloads, 290 pcm downloads).

However, I do agree that is a nice surge for vinyl and it is nice to see the old girl still kicking ...

For me, at this point, vinyl does not make sense. I have no media (got rid of all my records a long time ago when I got out of audio raising family, building career, etc), then I start thinking, turntable, tonearm, cartridge, cabling, phono pre-amp, stylus cleaner, record cleaner (probably need a machine like the VPI I had back in the day), etc... when does it end ...

And then I listen to one of the most elaborate systems I have ever heard at one of our club members houses... MBL (pre, amps, bass amps, near top of the line speakers), dCS, ARC ref 10 phono pre, 3 high end record cleaning machines, (not sure his table, arm and cartridge), etc. What is the first thing I hear... pops and clicks... I guess I have gotten spoiled by digital at this point.
