    Mike,

The Treo CT and Quatro CT are two best-in-class performers at their respective price points. Used in tandem with Ayre or ARC components, they are as organic sounding and musical as it gets.

Quatro CT is interesting, esp. the separate mid-woofer. I wonder how it is compared to Magico S3.

Dave Clark of PFO likes the PS Audio BHK pair with his personal pair of Quatro CT's. Based on my many years of owning Vandersteen speakers and now the BHK 250 I suspect he might be on to something. I always found the best pairing to be a tube preamp and a SS amp, though the Music Reference tube amps sounded good too as like ARC they are not "tubey" sounding like CJ or Cary. Years ago when still in production Dean's PSE Audio amps were a preferred amp.

I like both speakers and have owned the non-CT Quatro and have a lot of 'seat time' auditioning S3 mkIs and CTs at the dealer. the transparency and resolution is similar on both, the Quatro is more laid back, the S3 more forward. The S3 has more apparent mid-bass energy (kick drums sound uber realistic) the Quatro goes deeper and arguably has a flatter low bass response (due to integral 11 band sub-bass EQ). They both are SOTA in their own way and couldn't be more divergent in design philosophy (the usual trade offs). Whichever you choose they're both equally good iMO. fortunately for us, Mike sells both brands and can hook you up.

I like how Vandersteen divides the midrange between two drivers but the low 85db sensitivity rating results in more distortion.

Thanks a lot for the info. I already own S3 and think they are great, but also find Quatro CT very intriguing. Will try to see if I can audition locally.

If you get to hear them, please let us know. I heard Carbon 5A's (maybe 2 years ago) and although a not very good demo, I was impressed. I knew there was something special about the Vandys.

Will do, Joe. I also start to develop feeling that Vandys punch way above their price points.

I'm late to the party, but that's the perfect way to describe them.....punching way above their price point.
