I have to add that while I love sweet and euphoric SET sound, the Wooden combo is a little more neutral but still a little sweet on top - open, 3D, with detail sound but smooth. Like Paul says, just music. It’s a very natural sound.

Second, why wood? Why not just go for a metal enclosure like everyone else?
Third, what inspired you to get into this? Was there a speaker you like that you wanted to sound better?

    Good Luck to You!

    Hi! Thanks for the questions.
I love the sound of this tubes. First it was ef12-el12 combo, but ef12 is practically unrealistic to find in a NOS condition and in a considerable quantity. So, ef86 as a driver was a good substitute, without loosing the tonal properties of the amp.
I'm experimenting with this tubes for two decades, and love it. There are few other faworite combinations of course.
And I do like triode connected penthodes.

Why such an amp in general? I was collecting tube amps for many years, searching for the best sound. Also speakers, and many other things. To get some basic idea about my project you xan visit my Audio Antiquary page at the famous social network and see. I was always lazy to make pictures, but you can see some of my projects and works - like WE or Klangfim. But I was never happy with the sound even of the best amps, even after complete rebuilding.
My amps always sounded better for me. I'm making tube amps for 39 years now btw.
Some how expirience turns in to understanding of my own way, and finally WoodenAmp project wss started. Of course it's much linger story.

Wooden? I love it. It started as an experiment, and turns out to be fantastic.

And speakers. My faworite still be Altecs, only two way - 604 or VOTT. I even had to invent my own crossover (waiting for patent now).

    Misho,

Along with a patented crossover, are you coming out with a pair of speakers? You could tempt me with a pair as another high-ish efficiency design. Exciting times!!!

Hi folks, just joined the forum to be able to participate in this thread. First, as I was reading the thread to catch up, I saw this post and wanted to comment.

Please don't think 3.5 watts is not enough for "97db" speakers. A number of factors go into the interaction between an amp and a speaker. Going by that one single number will not give you the answer. For example the impedance curve of the speaker is important too. If it is fairly flat or does not have a big drop below 8ohms, that will make a big difference. The amp will drive the speaker to plenty of volume. 97 db from 1 watt is plenty loud.

Usually the dip below 8 ohms in most speakers is at the low frequencies. That is where power gets drawn. If your bass driver is light and fast and open baffle or mounted in a cabinet that allows it to move easily, the impedance curve should be fairly flat and the 3.5 watts will produce plenty of volume. Also if the crossover isn't one that absorbs power that matters too. Really the only way to know is to try it out.

At the moment I have the Wooden power amp connected to a pair of Proac Studio 100 speakers. These are rated at about 88 db and with the C3m version of the Wooden Preamp, I get as much volume as I need. No lack of loudness.

Also by the way, if it hasn't been mentioned, the Preamp can be delivered with the C3g tube. That is a much higher gain version of the C3m. The C3m is rated in triode connected mode at a "gain" of 19 (amplification factor). The C3g is rated (in triode connection) at a of 41. So just over double. When thinking about it, remember that more is not automatically better. It is system dependent. What is the output RMS voltage of your sources, and what voltage from the preamp will drive the power amp to obtain adequate listening levels without being too much. The most obvious difference from the C3g will be where your useful volume range will be on the preamp volume knob. Most higher gain preamps will show a fast increase in volume in the first half of the knobs turning range. The C3m will give a slower increase and wider range.

    Hope that is helpful.

    Thanks!

I have the full set of Wooden Amps. Very happy to have them. Using them one gets the feeling that every detail has been carefully thought out. The interactions of all the parts carefully optimized to work together in the best way possible. Fine tuned perfectly. Certainly there are other well designed and executed components out there, but many of the commercially produced ones just don't have the same sense of human touch and craft. That's a very intangible thing that might seem rather meaningless but it is a feeling these pieces convey to me anyway.

I think that it comes from the level of refinement. That is usually what anything produced by a highly skilled craftsman has over more production made products. It's the way by which you attain the highest quality. The passion that drove the designer builder to invest whatever time and effort was needed to satisfy the goal. That comes across with these.

I do have the RIAA. So I'm not sure I can really give you as expert of an answer on that because I've only recently put together my TT analog front end. It's a long story but I did not have a TT set up for many years. My main analog source was tape, both cassette and reel. I decided I needed to have a good TT to go dig out my record collection that has been stored pretty much since the 80s. So I haven't had lots of experience with record playback for a while until recently. I haven't been listening and comparing various phono preamps.

What I would say is that the same character of sound you experience from the preamp/power amp continues with the RIAA. I'm also using the Wooden MC step up transformer. I'm still sorting things out a bit on that end. And of course with turntables, cartridges, and SUTs there are many variables as to how they interact together.

At the moment I'm using a Miyajima Shilabe cartridge on a 12" Reed 2g arm, on a Thorens 125 mkII LB turntable. Kind of an odd combination but that's what I have at the moment. Since assessing the sound of a TT front end is so subjective and the interactions of the multiple components so complex and variable from setup to setup, that's one where you would need to try it with your other components to see what you think. Just know that like the other pieces, the design, build and sound are at a very high level.

I'm also really into Steampunk, talk about unobtainium! I'd like a steampunk themed rig some day.

The Misho Wooden amp and preamp seem very low maintenance and easy on tubes, like Misho mentioned.

Once you hear them on higher efficiency speakers, you don’t care about anything else but how great they sound.

Yes, exactly. Designed with the military standards in mind, to be maintenance free and work problemless for many years. Untill tubes replacement and than again

The only requirements - DO NOT EVER REPLACE TUBES AT SWITCHED ON AMPS. Valid for any tube amplifier, but since every tube is loaded with transformer - ejecting it while under full plate voltage can damage transformer. Imagine high voltage coil in a car ignition....

Congratulation with the Wooden amps. For many years I have been looking for Avantgarde Uno or Duo speakers. But always heard that finding the right amp was very impotant and hard to find. Then I found this thread and now I am again on the road to Avantgarde .... if I may ask.. do you use the Bricasti M1 together with the Wooden amps or do you only use turntable ?

    Hello Michael,

The Misho Wooden combo is absolutely wonderful.

My friend Paul and I are using Belden 8402 interconnects, he is using Duelund speaker cables and I am using Audioquest Rocket 88 for now. For my taste, cables on the warmer side of neutral work best.

I have a pair of Cardas Clear RCA that I plan on trying between the amp and preamp.

Then I found this thread and now I am again on the road to Avantgarde .... if I may ask.. do you use the Bricasti M1 together with the Wooden amps or do you only use turntable ?
I have vinyl but no turntable. I am too lazy

I am using the Bricasti M1SE with a Lumin U1mini as well as a modified Sonus via RCA SPDIF.

Sounds great. I think I will have to change my hole system and start all over if I go the Avantgarde way ☺️

    Hi Misho
Would it be okay to connect the Wooden Amps to a powerconditioner ? For now I am using a PS Audio P10

A Leap of Faith, sort of, thanks to Paul Yoo - The MISHO MYRONOV TUBE WOODENAMP and PREAMP!

I think as long as you are not exceeding the total power delivery of the power conditioner, I am sure it’s fine. I would think the amp/preamp combo consumes maybe a few hundred watts at most.

The beauty of my Misho Wooden combo is the power output is not astronomical, still feels and sounds powerful yet oh so musical and very natural.

The amp is 3.5wpc and the combo is perfectly setup for Avantgarde and high efficiency speakers. They are dead quiet, no hum whatsoever, have very natural vocals, depth, layering and tremendous 3D. It’s truly a marriage made in heaven.

Hello Joe, thanks for providing a platform for discussing these products. Could you please expand on what it is the WoodePreamp brings to the table that the other esteemed preamps you have heard don't do as well? If possible, could you isolate these attributes from it's pairing with the WoodenAmp (I understand if this is not possible). I am looking into purchasing a new preamp, which I intend to remain in my system for a very long time, and I'm intrigued by this one due to your breadth of experience with pres and your enthusiasm for the WoodenPreamp.

Re: A Leap of Faith, sort of, thanks to Paul Yoo - The MISHO MYRONOV TUBE WOODENAMP and PREAMP!

    Hi

Thank you for your kind words.

Let me say that the Misho Wooden preamp is a low gain preamp. It is dead quiet and the C3m tubes are going to last for about 10,000 hours.

It has a very natural, open and lively sound with superb vocals. It has layering and depth equal to or better than my CJ GAT2. I’ve paired it with six or eight amps already with wonderful results. It is absolutely superb.

My friend Paul was first to order it but I quickly followed suit. It’s a minimalist design but one that that offers music without doctoring it in any way but yet natural and organic.

My pleasure Paul. Misho’s gear is absolutely wonderful. You can tell his passion and soul are in these pieces. Yes they look unconventional but I love their looks.

Guys, you can not buy it. It's absolutely hand made and requires a lot of time and efforts to build.
I'm making amps on order only, and only when I have time and inspiration.
The current state is as follows - after finishing current batch of the amps, I will not make any more this year. May be next. But I need time for other project.
So, couple more weeks you can ask and jump in. Later when all the wood work will be done I will start to make transfomers and will not return to wooden workshop this year.

My production capabilities is very limited - two hands only, hope you understand.

Re: A Leap of Faith, sort of, thanks to Paul Yoo - The MISHO MYRONOV TUBE WOODENAMP and PREAMP!

I agree with Joe. This Wooden project gear are best purchase ever in my audio life. Simple as that. The price ? It’s priceless. It’s all hand made by two gentlemen’s with more than few decades experiment.

I never heard any other gear that sound so lively and pure to the music. Meaning nothing add to the sound. ( if you are expecting to have a warmish , romantic or meat on the bone ..etc. Look elsewhere ) while the Wooden amp and pre don’t sound like a tube on most area when the vocal kicks in then it’s unbelievably sweet as real human voice. ( this is only time I realize I listen to Tube ) I do not know how he does it but it’s extraordinary experience. Which you will never forget.

Again, if you have speakers that can drive with 3.5 watts. You won’t regret it.

Just for note : I don’t have any affiliation with Wooden amp. No I’m not on his payroll A Leap of Faith, sort of, thanks to Paul Yoo - The MISHO MYRONOV TUBE WOODENAMP and PREAMP!

I've officially joined the waiting list for the next batch of WoodenPreamps. I'm very excited. As an aside, will it be possible to move this thread to the preamp forum - I feel it gets lost in the woods being in the Vacuum tube section?
