    Re: Turntables Gallery

Here are a couple fo lesser known vintage tangential arm turntables.

The Marantz SLT-12 from the late 1960's and Revox 790 from the late 1970's

I would have submitted photos of the B&O tangential arm table, but it stinks and I hate the sound of the Bang and Out-Of-Tune products. With that turntable, you had to use their cartridge.

Ouch Gary, play nice . For the record B&O made some great tables, the 4000 or 4002 was the best made of the linear trackers IIRC. I had a conventional Beogram 1900 and the proprietary cartridges, especially the MMC-1 (line contact/sapphire cantilever) are excellent esp. when paired with the TOTL Beovox M70 speakers. There's a reason Soundsmith retips them.

Yes, it was the 4000 series I was thinking of, but I still didn't like the sound of it and it wasn't very good at racking disks that weren't perfectly flat. An ex of mine owned a 4004 I think.

One shop I hung out in was tinkering with mounting a Paramecium cartridge on a 4000/4002. In the end it wasn't worth the effort.

I thought about it too, but then I thought even further; about positioning (tonearm)...
    * Those pictures from Gary have the tonearm at the middle right side of the TT. ...Linear drive TTs have them at the rear (right).
...And ClearAudio have them 'high', and back.

No matter what you call it the stylus tracks in a straight line from the edge to the center vs. an arc for a pivoted arm. Since the straight line tracked by the stylus and the arm remain at 90* then a true tangent is maintained. So between these two you derive linear and tangental. Same same, Yes?

Bob, a tangential arm and linear [tracking] arm are the same thing. There are a few ways to mount the cartridge to have it track tangentially.

Thx Gary, I thought so too; but it was interesting those TT's pictures you posted, in their different tracking position.

Thanks! The record weight is working very well, it replaces a Clearaudio weight that I had nicknamed "Needle Breaker". The way is is made with a slant is perfect in breaking nude needles prior to the cartridge body hitting the record weight when the arm is thrown for some reason or another (not purposely naturally). I have learned the hard way, breaking one needle a way back. Having a straight tower aleviates this problem. Otherwise the additionnal weight helps the Minus K in doing it's job since it's closer to the upper limit of 55 pounds it should be at. Wasn't sure of the color at first but now I love it.

Yes I'm looking forward to it, just received it last month and currently still in its crate. That's not my arm, Christopher put that in place to take pics. I'll be putting the 12" REED in the above pic with MSL cart. Did you notice I had StillPoints Ultra 5's installed for feet?

NorthStar the TechDAS Air Force One is my real pride and joy and I'm very proud to own.

Bob Graham is in one pic setting up the Elite arm, the only one in the world at the time.
