Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Hi Bob,
Expect for Michael's review on August
I love AMG, so much information is like
The needle is a vacuum.
Unheard something close to it.
Can you show and explain to me your
System? Looks nice
What about the HRS platform ? Do you
like it 100%?
Nelson
And welcome !!!!

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Hi Nelson, thanks for the warm welcome. I posted a few pics of my system, I'm behind you in terms of my Audio Research rig, now a couple iterations behind ARC's current state-of-the-art. I'm in the Ref 3, Ref 110 category, though I did replace the tube set to KT120s. I've only been back in the high end hobby now for about 5 years, slowly building the system and also tweaking out my music room with appropriate treatments. My wife, the minister of finance, keeps me in check. That said, this was supposed to be an "off" year for new audio gear, but somehow I managed to squeeze out the new AMG, Benz, and HRS rack. Also some curtains and lighting for my room (the two together would have got me a Ref Phono2SE.) But I like the Einstein TTC phono-pre. Fremer had said several years back when he reviewed it that it was then in his top 3 (or maybe 5) phono amps. While it is solid state, it is the only SS piece made by Einstein, and they supposedly worked hard to create a piece that contained the "tube" sound of all their other components. Great bass weight and control, tremendously dynamic, delicate midrange and vocals, and an airy and delicate top end. I don't find it lacking, but I have not heard a large number of other phono amps.
Regarding HRS rack, I feel it is part and parcel with the AMG. The Dagogo review of the HRS base for the AMG convinced me I should go ahead and order the rack with the table. I went for a larger one, but still tuned to the weight distribution of the AMG. I wanted a larger base so I could put a dust cover over the table, and the smaller base would have made that a challenge. My dealer is also carries HRS, so it was highly recommended. He tried some other isolation under the table but thought the HRS brought the best out of the table.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Mikey Fremer's review of the AMG Viella 12 is now viewable in the August Stereophile. He summarizes:
If I had to sell my Contiuuum Caliburn and scale back, the AMG rig would be on my short list, along with the Air Force One, the TW Acustic Raven, the Spiral Groove SG1.1 and Centroid arm, the Brinkmann Balance, and a handful of others. The AMG combo costs far less than any of them, yet seems as well made, with sound at least as good.
And that is why the AMG Viella 12 and 12J2 tonearm are an incredible value. They'll lift your spirits with every LP you play.
Overall, I felt his review to be somewhat less enthusiastic compared to Jonathan Valin's review in The Absolute Sound, but his Continuum table sets an awfully high bar for comparison. But I do also note his review of some of the tables on his short list also speaks of the same "slightly down a peg or two" qualities compared to the Caliburn. I've never heard a Caliburn table, and I'm afraid to!

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Nelson, I've got to imagine your rig, with all that top ARC gear, including the REF10 and REF PH2SE, sounds just amazing. As I mentioned before I'm an iteration behind on the ARC gear, but still the sound with the AMG just melts me sometimes. Try Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble" if you get a chance. Not only is the sound amazing, but the emotion comes through in spades (though that guy needs a new girlfriend.) Some of the best music/art evolves from the pain of a broken heart.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Its a beautiful table, super build quality with some unique engineering that's for sure.
The only thing that bothers me about the AMG is what may be what gives it the sound everyone likes so much. (strange sentence that was).
The vertical bearing is a spring. That means you essentially have two springs at opposite ends of the arm (the other is the cartridges cantilever) both resonating at different frequencies. May be a great idea I don't know as I don't have one of those rings on my finger the smart guys have, but it just does not sit right with me.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
At the music event in Seattle several weeks ago, where Wilson demoed the new Sasha 2, I spoke with Garth of Musical Surroundings and he said he'd recently been receiving a few LPS. I had purchased the one used in the AMG introduction at the music event last year, it was the only way I was able to get one. It is mounted on my v12.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Looks like my post was a little out of context sorry, just saw AMG V12, the table fascinates me and I just blurbed out a post.
Such a unique arm, I wish I had an engineering degree to understand it better.
I have a feeling the one I heard had an LP or LPs installed in it.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
I also have heard the GFinger Statement and I concur sonically it is amazing and LP-S equally wonderful perhaps a touch, ever-so-slight softer but like silk is softer than 1200 thread count cotton. I would say the Goldfinger is a better cartridge but also $10k more, and while maybe "better" the LP-S is one of the best cartridges money can buy, in not top ten, perhaps even top 5. (I have yet to hear MC Anna).

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
I'm curious if your findings would be the same if the cartridges were swapped to the it's opposing table…..Benz on the Spiral Groove and the Goldfinger on the AMG v12? In other words, which is imparting more influence on the sound characteristics that you are hearing….the table or the cartridge? Any thoughts?

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Exceptional question. I listened the past two days to both tables. I truly believe once we get into these level of tables the cartridge imparts a bigger difference than the table or tonearm or wiring. I heard the Goldfinger Statement on my Innovation Wood and my Spiral Groove. And my Benz LP-S on my innovation wood and my AMG. The sonic traits carried over table to table. I will say the spiral groove amplified the awesomeness of the Goldfinger tho. More open and dynamic. So I believe the key is to buy just enough turntable and tonearm and splurge on the cartridge. That's where the magic lies.

The Benz LP-S is definitely on my radar. I wonder how it compares to something like an MC Anna.

Never heard an LP-S but the MC Anna sounds almost like digital without the rough edge (perfect), I love mine, use it in an SME 20/12 with the V12 arm.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
ive heard both and alot of cartridges in between them. (pricewise) the lp-s is a great cartridge and ive not heard another around the $5k that i think even comes close .ive done about 4 or 5 listening sessions with it and the original LP too(which does way better than the lp-s on jmw arms) i thought it easily bettered the $5500 davinci. but thats just me.i tried to buy it as a demo off the guy several times.
but the anna is in a different league. that or the koetsu tigereye platinum are my favorite cartridges i ever heard that i could never afford. and thats including a couple more expensive ones and in the same price area as well. but what i think does not matter as most all of them were heard in different places on different gear, so who is to really say until they have them in their home.Steve

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Thanks Dpod4 for sharing your thoughts with me on this. I understand that the table and arm are still important pieces of the puzzle, but with the cartridge actually being the only transducer of this 3 piece puzzle, it would make sense that it may impart the most influence on the sound. Also, I continually hear similar sonic reports of each cartridge from others, to sound the same as what you have heard from your experiments.
Although I do not have the LPS, I do have the Benz Ruby Zebra Wood which is S-Class, priced $4,000 and it also has similar characteristics/house sound of the LPS (I'm not saying quite as nice as the LPS though, but similar). I'm still trying to decide which table will be my "last" table. I have no plans on getting rid of my Benz cartridge, and with your experience of these great tables with a similar cartridge to that of mine, I thought it might be logical to ask for your thoughts.
Thanks again for sharing!

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
i agree with his assessment. great cartridge that makes you smile when you hear it. top quality tonearm and wires is huge. the table itself doesnt necessarily make a huge difference after that as long as it is stable, solid and quiet. i been messing with different tables for years, and im now smartening up, my next upgrade is the triplanar arm. instead of the whole table. good luck!!

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
You are welcome. Yesterday I went back and forth between the Goldfinger and Benz LP-S. The Goldfinger throws a bigger wall of sound and is more dynamic and extended. But....there is something sweet and perfectly musically right and romantic (without too much coloration) about the Benz. Soooo easy to listen to. Draws me in. I love the Benz. Will never part with it.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
I know what you mean about the Benz. When I listen through the Benz, I hear the music…it draws me in and engages my emotions. Sometimes with other cartridges, they can be thrilling to listen too, but it's seems like they are more about the hi-fi then the musical message….so it seems with me at least.
So, with you being blessed with a trifecta of three top of the line tables….do you ultimately have a favorite and if so, for what reasons? Do you notice if any of the three are any better at speed and pitch stability than the others?
Thanks,

Adding my 2c to the thread, we are very fortunate. IMHO, there are more great cartridges now than ever before. To top it off, you don't have to spend a fortune to get great sound. In addition to the cartridges discussed earlier, I have also heard great sound from Transfiguration Proteus (still own) Soundsmith The Voice, and ZYX Universe II.
I have made a major system change (Big Focals) so its very difficult to make sound comparisons to things I had before. I can only say my current favorite is the Anna.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
When I am able to position everything just so in order to make hum go down I like what the Ypsilon does - it brings a solidity to the sound. Anchors it and adds weight to the foundation. Slightly more coherent too. The trade off is the noise/hum (arc ref 2se is dead quiet) and a slight deadening or numbing effect. More relaxed and "centered" but slightly less vibrant and open than without SUT. I can't even use it with my air right atc-2 & ATE-1. Hum completely takes over.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the Innovation since it takes two arms!! It also has incredible pitch stability ... I have the external power supply. I think the highest performing table is the spiral groove and centroid. The most smartly engineered and user friendly and future collectors item artwork is the AMG. When I want vibrant and thrilling and hear everything on a really good recording I go to spiral groove. When I want relaxing musical appreciation especially with brighter recordings I go to AMG and LP-S. When I want meaty fun mono I go to innovation and Miyajima zero. I had Kurt Doslu who owns echo audio over. He had golden ears. He thought the spiral groove and Goldfinger was about as good as analogue gets. Michael Fremer was kind enough to give me advice that the Goldfinger on the AMG sounds amazing. Haven't tried that combo yet. I like the Benz on there as I think the table was designed with that cartridge in mind. I think the AMG and Benz bring some magic to the music much like people hear when describing shindo gear etc.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Thank you for your synopsis on the various analog rigs you are using.
Did you notice much improvement in the pitch stability of the Innovation when you added the external power supply, or was it more geared to improving the black background/noise reduction/improvement of dynamics kind of thing?
Do you feel the pitch stability of the innovation is ahead of the AMG and Spiral Groove as well?
You've got three great rigs…I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of them.
Thanks again for sharing your thought with us all. It's incredibly hard for anyone to be able to visit a dealer that would even have all three tables in their store to demo. Being able to read about your experiences of all three in the same system and room is invaluable! Kudos to you!
Happy listening,

Nice collection of tables Darrin!
I agree that the zero is a great mono cart. I bought one after listening to it at the montreal show in 2013. Just a note that there is a twin armboard option for the AMG now available.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
Great question. Pitch stability was already pretty flawless. Only thing I noticed with power supply was lowered noise floor. More settled and at ease. Crazy. Spiral groove and AMG also no issues and my ear is sensitive to this. I had a basis TT that I could hear speed/pitch stability issues.

Re: AMG v12 TURNTABLES
I am listening to amg v12 with Benz lp-s and right now it is my favorite. Rich and musical. If tables were women the sound of the spiral groove and goldfinger statement would be striking and undeniable - the AMG and LP-S would be sultry and beautiful.
