Cheap power upgrade
Hi,
I posted this elsewhere, but it should be posted here...a bit more appropriate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I don't have expensive stereo equipment, but I've been interested in getting the best sound quality that I could get from what I have. (I don't mind tweaking the equipment if it's not too difficult)
I've come across one tweak that made a dramatic difference in audio performance from my system. I didn't have to buy anything or mod the system in any way.
I simply plugged the power cord from my filtered power strip into the power outlet on my stove. I'm not sure why this works, but it must have to do with main voltage powering the stove.
I get a much clearer sound and even an increase in power output (volume) just by powering it from that stove outlet...hard to believe.
You can try it for yourself, see if you notice the same thing...that is, if your stove has an outlet, and it's not too far from your setup. (I guess you could use a good extension cord for that.)

Re: Cheap power upgrade
There's got to be a story behind your idea of plugging it into a stove. How did this even occur to you?
I've never had or even seen a stove with a outlet. But maybe I should install one in my listening area.Christian

Re: Cheap power upgrade
From the photo, it looks like an all electric stove/range.
Probably the heating elements run on 240V and the controls and receptacle on 120V.
How old is the stove? How old is your home.
As some decades ago, stove circuits switched from 3 wire to 4 wire.

Re: Cheap power upgrade
Yes, the main stove is powered with the thick 240V cord, the same type your household dryer uses in your laundry area. On top of the stove is where the old, round, glass screw in type fuse goes (GP15amp).
Not sure how old the stove is, just renting this place at the moment.
I'm not sure why I get a difference in performance..it must be like a dedicated circuit from a stronger power supply.
I've plugged my audio system into a stove at a previous location, and got the same result.

Re: Cheap power upgrade
Yes, there is a bit of a story behind it.
I first tried that when I was living in a tiny bachelor size apartment. I noticed something odd about the way the regular wall sockets were wired; wired unusually, not sure if the ground was hooked up properly.
So, I decided to try the stove socket, it was pretty close to where I had my equipment, just needed a short power strip. I got a lot better sound from plugging it in there, and I'm getting the same result here in this latest location.
Most stoves I've seen have an outlet; I guess I haven't seen all the newer models.
If you have an island type stovetop setup, you are out of luck...no plug is available.

Re: Cheap power upgrade
It's not on a dedicated line; it also has a household dryer on that 240V line.
My filtered strip is kind of old, I have to admit...it wasn't very expensive...I'll look into the Venom Defender...it probably would give me a better performance.

Cheap power upgrade
I’m guessing those appliances are on a 30 amp circuit, maybe 40, and your probably right on a nice gauge power cable, but it is interesting, never heard of someone doing this let alone power at the stove.
Maybe you’ll get a different sound when your roasting versus baking, or if your clothes are drying. Had to throw that in there, but it’s all good.
Your looking for bettering your sound, and that’s what it’s all about. You may consider being careful on drawing too many amps with everything all on one circuit.

You may be right about some difference in audio quality when the oven is on.....I swear I heard a faint gobbling sound this past Thanksgiving.
Who knows...maybe it was my imagination...

Re: Cheap power upgrade
Thanks, Mep....I certainly do have an imagination.
Yes...I probably just imagined I heard that turkey gobble while it roasted in the oven!!
But...just think about it Mep...you have an audio system being powered via a stove(oven)...there are many unexplained things in this world, Mep...many mysteries science can't explain!!
Somehow, the ghost of that turkey was reaching out to me through my audio system!
Or, maybe it was just subconscious guilt on my part.
You see, Mep...I love turkey...I love eating turkey all the time. I cook turkeys so often, I eat it more than chicken! Turkeys are actually cheaper per pound here than chicken, so the frozen leftovers come in handy.

Sorry Mike, I never met Bob in British Columbia.
I happened to live there, too, a long time ago..but I never ran into Bob.
I'm here in Newfoundland, the island part...it's completely on the other side of Canada.
Interesting note, I'm currently staying in "Dildo"....yes Dildo...the same Dildo that Jimmy Kimmel was mentioning on his show. He was talking about running for mayor of Dildo.

What counts is in the heart of people, ...their hi-fi stereo sound system, the high end emotional impact, lots of sound orgasms, the sensual pleasure of looking @ the platine spinning, and a safe distance (2 meters).
Everything else is routine; good food, clean air and water, good wine, a fast Italian car design, good on gas, and a lovely wife.
Welcome to the audio world in high gear.

In that case you are forgiven Sargent Schultz, ...all good to explore new power deliveries.
Try plugging the Nordost into your stove's receptacle; start @ 400° Fahrenheit and increase slowly till the bass tighten just right.~ Bob ~
