Yamaha Impressed

One of the guys I was at Axpona with is a big Yamaha fan and has some vintage gear of theirs and really familiar as a fan. I accompanied him to the Yamaha room and later we listened to their headphones and amp.

I haven't heard Yamaha in decades but was aware they had put out some higher priced gear. I can now vouch the higher price gear is indeed high end as well. I was very impressed with what I heard.

The room had Yamaha towers and a set of bookshelf speakers hooked to their 3200 integrated amp. It had a sound I could sit and listen to for a long time, smooth without being slow. I noticed the towers and bookshelf were pretty much timbre matched and the headphones had the same high quality "house" sound. I say "house" because it was apparent Yamaha is going for a type of sound that carries through their products. A sound that is very good and just brings you into the music and invites you to stay.

They had their preamp and power amp but they were static on display. I love it when the performance of a brand or product has the ability to just completely convince you of their abilities like Yamaha did for me.

Ask your Yamaha buddy if he has the Yamaha C2a preamp. If he does, you should give it a listen. It's pure Class A and runs hot like old Krell line stages (think KBL and the KRC-HR). The C2a sounds great and it has a really good sounding phono stage.
