What needs to happen for you to suspend disbelief

For me, Dynamics, Presence, & Tone have to be present in abundance.

Without them, it cannot happen, no matter how much detail, how big the soundstage, how black the blacks, or how striking the audiophile sound effects may be.

Jim

Hi Jim, love your book. I've lent it to many clients over the years. Hope you are well!

...what has to happen for you to suspend disbelief and think your system has transported you to the venue, or the performers into your room?

In my experience, in order to "get lost in the music", two things have to happen.

First, the system has to do something so well that it sounds real in that area. It can be timbre, coherence, dynamics, slam, soundstaging, sense of envelopment, articulation, whatever. But there has to be something to latch onto, some aspect of the illusion that is effortlessly convincing, before you can let yourself be transported into the music.

That's the easy part. The hard part is this:

Second, the system has to not turn around and do something so poorly that it distracts you and destroys the illusion. Clipping would be one abrupt example, but it can be anything obtrusive that reminds you that you're really just sitting in your living room with your eyes closed listening to something artificial.
