I was going to buy either a pair of S-5 or S-3 once my construction is done. However, a few pairs of M-5s have shown up on the used market. My room is small at 15.5x15 but has a large 7' opening in the back into the new addition (another 11x15). Would they overwhelm my room?

I would guess that with two 9" woofers, the M5 may not be producing more bass than an S5. Your room, with the opening should be able to accommodate an S5.

I've been tempted many times at 30k- and below 20k, its just an incredible speaker. I really like birch-ply cabinets and soft dome tweets. The only issue is its a pig to drive which has kept me away.

The M5 is a much bigger speaker than the S5, so will have more extension.

I think magico has improved their engineering since the M5 was produced so more bang for the buck with S series and more SOTA with Q series. But imho the m5 is the best looking speaker they ever built.
