What makes you believe the recording emitting from your system is a wonderfully mastered recording?

No compression, clear air between the instruments, dynamics, the sound of the instruments and type of strings (flat or round wound bass strings sound completely different)

Last night I listened to Bela Fleck Live at the Quick. Awesome live recording

I'm trying not to sound like I'm copying Brian but it is the tone/textures, lack of layering, where most of the instruments are on top of each other in the middle sound stage, lack of compression, good sound stage where instruments are in their own space.

Sometimes for me it's things not so audiophile, for example, I like a recording that sounds live in the studio, like Ella Fitzgerald's Fine & Mello.

Or, albums like Eric Clapton's Slow Hand, where it's so well put together, background singers have their own space, I think it's just an example of a good older recording. It could be that I know it so well too. Like hearing Clapton's slight lisp on All The Way.

It's really heard to put into words but I know it when I hear it.

When I forget about all the (left brain) analytical observations (soundstage, timber, bass tightness, high end extension etc) and simply enjoy the music as if I’m at a live event

the playback has to be clean with an open soundstage for me pitch could be wrong but if the recording gets the size of the space right i'll probably be able to get into it.
