Hello friends,

Did you ever listen to those amps ?
From the company web site :

"
Features

-This is a high output and high efficiency single ended mono power amplifier with 805 tubes.

-Chassis features a 10mm aluminum top plate for aesthetics and a thick, massive foundation for attaching components to optimize sound. The design offers the luxury aesthetics similar to the EC/HE series.

-This unit can give you aggressive sound by using our original IITC circuit.

-S/N ratio is improved by DC ignition of filament, eliminating capacitor from signal circuit. Real sound can be played by a composition of direct circuit and coupled transformers."

Well, who is looking for an "aggressive" sound in our hobby ? :D bad translation from japanese I hope...

Stephen ( Puma Cat from the other site) listened to them and found them stunning.
His friend had a complete Shindo system from 301 to speakers. The Wavacs were said to outperform the Lafon amps by a large margin. Which is not really a fair fight.
The Wavacs are quoted at 55W of power while the Lafon are just at 20W.

A high quality high powered SET amplifier may be a very hard to beat unit.
If I ever sell my CCQs one day, those are the amps I would be highly interested in.

Any feedback here ?

Thanks !

Wavac gear s quite nice. Amazing build quality. I had a wavac preamp for a very long time along with the entry level 300b. I have no experience with this amp, but I'm guessing it is great based on my past experience with brand. I'd love to hear their stereo 300b amp.

As to the Wavac vs Shindo, I think Stephen's friend had the 300b Lafons, right? Maybe they just prefer the extra watts? Who knows? It is so hard to say one thing is a "winner" over another.

If I am remembering correctly, I do recall that his friend purchased that system from a former US federal agent who listed the items for auction on audiogon and then ended the auction early.

It seems like Shindo, Air Tight and WAVAC are really the leading players in this space right now.

WAVAC gear sure is perdy! Would love to hear it.

Which space? Japanese tube gear? Don't forget Kondo and Zanden! Actually, I don't really think that airtight is that big of a player as they only have one single ended and as far as I am aware and they don't really seem to focus on their preamps too much. They have a full line of preamps, but nobody really ever speaks much of them. Again, awesome build quality, though.

Sweet sounding low powered tube gear.

There are a lot of companies on that list, but Audio Note UK should be on it as well.

Air Tight is hard to find but worth the hunt. I replaced my ARC Ref40 with Air Tight Ref 2001. A really musical well built piece.

you can add Audion, Melody, Tri, LM, Coincident etc.

I'd like the hear the Wavac EC300b. I've heard the lower end stuff isn't so hot- underspec'd tformers to be exact.

Kev,

That was my guess too : they probably liked the added power.
A 55W well made SET must be really something impressive.
