VPI Avenger Review

Nice review Mark. Love my VPI table. The comment about the clamp was odd for me. I didn't quite follow. But regardless, nice review. Dynamic is definitely a good word for it.

About the clamp, do you use it every time you play an LP and have no issues landing it perfectly or are you referring to something else I said about the clamp?

I use the clamp only on badly warped records. But I've never had any issues when I do use it. I think part of the reason might be because my stand is so low, so I can get right over top of the TT. I can see how it would be a challenge if the TT was on the top shelf.

For a small warp in the album, I find the unipivot actually tracks pretty good.

OK. The clamp is intended to be used on every LP, not just warped ones. I have seen people at shows just place it on the platter and leave it there because they didn't want to be bothered with setting it in place on every LP. If you just place the clamp on the platter before you put a record on and leave the clamp in place, you do get some benefit from the flywheel effect of the heavy clamp. If you haven't tried that yet, you should if you don't want to use the clamp on every LP.

Makes sense, but it's a big and clunky to use on every LP, IMO.

Which is why some people "set it and forget it" by placing it on the platter and using it as a flywheel. It is big and can be clunky to use until you make it a habit and become used to it. I also thought we need to invent a VPI clamp ring holder so you have some place to hang it while you are changing records. Fortunately, my left sub is close to the SRA rack and when I pull the clamp off the LP, I set it down on top of my sub while I'm changing LPs.

Great review Mark!! Wait until you get the Magnetic platter, it brings even more to an already fabulous TT.

Thanks Mark! I'm looking forward to hearing the other versions.

Mark, that's a great review. Thanks for sharing it.

Have you ever reviewed or heard the SME Model 10? If you have, would the "basic" Avenger fall into the same category?

Very nice review Mark! Agree with Mark (MDP), the table gets better with the magnetic platter. Waiting for part 2!

Thanks guys! I have never reviewed or heard the SME Model 10 so unfortunately, I can't make any comparisons for you.

Have you heard any other SME tables?

Thanks, Mark.

Have you heard any other SME tables?

Unfortunately no. I just haven't had the opportunity yet. I obviously believe in SME as I own an SME 312S arm as well as an SME 3012-R arm.

I enjoyed the review, so thank you. I too look forward to the magnetic platter.

I have read only good things about SME. So was hoping you would've heard one and may be in a position to offer some opinions, especially in comparison to VPI.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks for your review, Mark. I recently set up the Avenger Reference with Lyra Etna here for demonstration.

Thanks Brian. I bet your setup sounds great.
