well I trialed some SS electronics with the Hawthorne Trio speakers, and what I heard was quite promising. Liked the tonal balance, and presentation of dynamics with the NEW amp and H CAT pre, but lost a lot of the sound stage depth I have with the SET and transformer based passive pre. tried the SS pre, with the SET, but the passive still brings more to the table. So I sent both pieces off to a new home.
I am thinking I want to give a SS amp a shot with these speakers. They seem to like a bit more power than my SET has, although their spec's would indicate a favorable pairing with SET. 94 dB efficient, 8 ohm load, 6 dB per octave slope on the passive crossovers, and SS power on the bass drivers. But the 33 WPC SS amp did sound better.
So the question is if I were to go to the used market, what is in the $1.5K to $2K range that is going fit the bill. I know the Fist Watt amps are a reasonable option. I also admit to being intrigued by the new production Adcom 4 digit series of amps. I have to admit the ad copy has caught my attention.....
Not sure what my other options are. I suppose a big amp like a BAT or older Krell is possible, as the power might come in handy some day. As a general rule I find the Class D amps to be a bit too smooth for my liking. I like nuance, detail, subtlety, layering, and texture. Not sure which SS amps can deliver those kinds of goods.
