Trade Up Program?

This is the second time McIntosh has done this that I have seen. Around 6-7 years ago they did this and my dad traded in his MC2255 amp for a MC402. He was able to get more for his old amp than he paid for it, so it was a nice deal for him. I would have liked to have seen him keep the 2255, as it is one of my all-time favorite Mc amps, but he was happy with the upgrade. I think McIntosh should include HT pre/pros as a part of this, especially considering the significantly diminished resale value on them, as an incentive to upgrade to the newer models. I've decided to jump off that upgrade train as it's just not worth it for me anymore - technology just moves too fast!
 
All of McIntosh's current generation monoblock amplifiers have reached pinnacle performance levels & will be desirable for many years to come, IMO.

Similarly, any 2ch balanced pre-amp without a DAC will be collectible.

This category of gear is made so well that there really isn't much incentive to want to move it.

If they bought out a better table than the MT10, say with 2 arms, I would consider it. But it would still have to have the blue cyclops eye!

I think this is a great program. Kudos for new Mc Management for spreading their wings a little. And as Steve said, most Mc gear has reached new, all time performance heights. Take the 452/601 or 2301's for example. When I asked the folks at Mc about a replacement for the 2301's, they said, "not until we figure out a way to make it better......and we haven't been able to do that."

I would like to see a new reference level preamp myself. :)

C1000 is a great design, but there are 3 minor operational/design faults that I have come across with the C1000.

1. When it is triggered on to passthru mode, it also triggers on the last active source during warm up phase & then powers that trigger off when passthru mode is assumed after warm-up.

2. When powering off via passthru trigger, seldomly, it will not power off, & the LCD display is messed up with a combination of the words passthru & the last active source. Powering off via IR turns it off no problem along with the triggered amps.

3. Tubes burn in the phono stage even though that source is not selected. That is my biggest gripe as the front porch gets heaps more hours with passthru. So, my rare & precious NOS phono stage tubes are powered for nothing.

Apart from those 3 idiosyncrasies, it is a phenomenal pre-amp. Perhaps there is room to improve the headphone amp & phono stage.

If they got DAC happy with a new reference pre-amp like they did with everything else that was late D&M Holdings era, that would be very disappointing. The way to go would be a "C1000D" that would work in with the C1000C controller via a loop back to the P and/or T. Yes, I am suggesting a triple stack reference pre-amp. Or why don't they just rejig the MEN. It is in many respects performing that function internally anyway.
 
The MX160 is sure to be an interesting new beast. I will speculate that it will drop a lot of legacy I/O. I hope it is a 2 or 3 box unit too with an upgrade path to help future proof it. I would like to see video switching & DSP in a separate box which could be swapped out for future technology. The core boxe(s) consisting of the multi-ch analog pre-outs & controller would be retained. This could open up optional possibilities like a multi-ch tube driven analog pre-amp stage.

Dolby ATMOS driven by tubes. I would buy that.
