Thorens

If you mean that polished mahogany one, that is really nice. But it is a Garrard 301.

I have been looking at similar vintage tables as well, but the cost can get very hich and mechanically they’re not on par with the modern stuff.

There’s nevertheless a certain charme to it IMHO.

The Garrard 301 was big in the restoration market, but that is coming to an end. SME bought all rights to the 301 and are re-introducing it, in as original build as is possible, with an SME arm. But, at a cool $23,000. Yea right... you have to be nuts to buy 1960 tech newly released at $23k....

By the way, all parts to restore old ones are no longer available....

This is the cover story for the latest Stereophile mag. Art is all excited about it... I think it is rather silly...

They just killed a flourishing Garrard modding business, and got out of the tone arm business in the process.

Interesting to see where they are going with this prehistoric design.

Yea, I was kind of shocked. Why would they want to do this even. It is not like this design could ever make a truly worthy $23,000 turntable in my view. There are 301's available, recently refurbished, for a fraction of that.

My wife and I started looking at photos of Garrard 301's and 401's, and Thorens, on sites of various rebuilders. Totally charming! But I'm led to believe that none will perform on a par with my current RP-8 (??). Perhaps just looking at the photos will be good enough?? We have no room for 2 tables.

I also like to look at pictures of the refurbished Garrards, but they simply do not perform on the same level with my Brinkmann Taurus.
