The Wonderful World of Projection

Hi, Bob, thought I would join another friendly crew, :hi: ... only thing, this website is loaded with Javascript junk, which turns my laptop into molasses, a right pain to get around and look at things - plus, some of the ads, etc, are a bit crass ... :)

Anyway, agree that projection can be spectacular - but big headache is the need for good darkness levels for viewing, I wouldn't want a separate, daytime viewing mechanism.

I really like my Mitsubishi HC5 projector and 92" Elunevision screen. My Toshiba 65" RPTV is dying (picture distorted until it warms up 20 min. later) so I will be tossing it this spring. I won't be replacing it, I am going to use my projector as my main tv. It is hard to beat the large picture and in fact I am considering getting a better 106" screen (not much bigger but better screen material).

I also have to invest in some black out curtains and possibly some black velvet for the walls and ceiling near the screen. As the ht is in my dining room, painting is out of the question. Like audio, there are a lot of tweaks in video but it is a lot of fun. I totally agree with this article.

Panasonic is not making plasmas anymore, and Samsung has joined too; very soon. Get your 65" plasma set before they're all gone; for your bedroom.
And get a 4K projector, eventually, for your dark man cave (downstairs, or upstairs).

In your living room, hire a bunch of beautiful strippers and invite your best friends. :)

By the way, I found my smartphone's screen much much better than the one from my laptop; way better!
How come the laptop's screens are so awful!? ...You move just one or two degrees to the left or to the right, or below and above, and the picture is completely washed out!
I am so unhappy with my brand new laptop because of that very poor screen.
How much for a laptop with a good resolution screen (and with wide angles visibility); three grands+? ...Something is amiss here, big time.

And, it's very slow to get used to a pad instead of a mouse (I wish I had a touch screen now).

I'm starting to believe that laptops (notebooks, ultrabooks, hybrids, ...) are from the prehistoric age, and ultra-pads are more the way to go (from 10 to 15 inches).

And for home theater, a 120" iPad? :) ...16K Super-Extra AMOLED, 6D, 2.35:1 aspect ratio. ...Because large pads will eventually kill front projectors; we might not be alive but future reality is a fact that we can't 'excape', dead or alive.

- In Japan, they are selling plastic women. ...And looking more and more like .... not the cheap models but the deluxe ones with full rubber (no air), and all the trimmings that come with such ($50,000+).
We are becoming so virtual that true reality is becoming more and more boring. ...If that makes any sense!

...The wonderful world of "making" projections. ...Living inside the movies. ...Holographic world.
{By the way, 3D is much more involving than 2D; and no matter what people say - it's just a fact.}

...And stereo with only two speakers is a restricted vision as well; much more dimensional sound stage with three and/or five speakers. Nothing's wrong with 2-channel hi-fi, just a thing of the past...
 
Tsk, Bob, you're being hard on 2 channel - wait 'till you hear it done properly, you might change your mind, :). I haven't heard any multi-channel yet that does anything for me, might be OK for gee whiz sound effects in action movies, but otherwise what's going on is just too obvious, quickly comes irritating.

What would be interesting down the track is having all the walls of a room seamlessly covered with display panels - while not watching anything they pretend to be paint, ;), and then when fired up one entire wall becomes the main screen, with suitable mood adjusting patterns or whatever on the other surfaces - could be rather flash!!

I used to do surround sound with Acoustat 2+2 fronts, Acoustat model 4 rears and Axiom EP-500 sub. The surround processor was an EAD Ovation. It was quite immersive with some movies but I simplified the system to 2.1 (removed the the model 4's and EAD) and didn't really miss them. A good 2 channel system can provide a very good movie experience.

I believe I have heard (and still hear) it pretty good Frank; but wait till you hear hi-res multichannel music (not movie effects) well recorded with intelligent taste!

Not many people are into what I'm talking about; John here and Kal Rubinson, are two Classical music lovers, and in surround sound, smartly done.
I'm also part of that small group.
As for movies; some of them have an excellent music score, in multichannel hi-res audio. ...Not many people seem to be aware and appreciate the fact.
I believe that many audiophiles are still living in the past, or making a quick judgement on a small specimen of wrong material, if you know what I mean...

But both stereo and multichannel music have some excellent quality recordings.

That's a very interesting, and doable concept!

I agree Albert. ...True surround sound (with more discrete speakers around you) is simply a higher level of experimentation.
And the mixing/recording engineers have the most important role of that experimentation.
Then the surround pros @ Dolby & dts headquarters, etc. (surround sound engineers); they work on sophisticated programs, and locations (speaker positioning) to obtain the best surround performance/experience.

For me, it's a logical evolution; scientifically speaking, not necessarily business wise (@ home, and not @ the commercial theaters).
If you can spread the sound more around, and the moving pictures too; the closer we approach our world's reality.

This thread is about a larger picture from front projectors; have you ever seen a real-life moose or bear up close? ...Then you know the impact they had on you.
