Well, I traded my Quad ESL 57s for Monitor Audio Silver RS6es. Financially it was about an even trade. The reason for getting rid of the Quads is because they were getting a little bit old, but are still in pristine condition as I never abused them. Also, at my age, I have to downsize my audio system for smaller living conditions in a retirement home, and also something more attractive in a small living space with a smaller footprint. It would have to be speakers that sound as good as the Quads. The Monitor's are used and the review by 'Stereophile' and 'What HiFi' was very good, so I thought this would be a good choice as there would also be very little out of pocket extra costs. I am using the same components that I used for the Quads, namely a REL subwoofer, Pathos Classic II integrated amp., Nottingham Analog Space Deck with Clearaudio woody cart. and Meridian CD player.
I find the Monitors are more robust and crystal clear than the Quads, but the high's from some CD's can be too shrill.
So, I'm just curious if any of you have had, or listened to the Monitor Audio Silver RS6 speakers, and what do you think of them and my assessment?:S:S:huh::huh:

Your ears are correct. They are a good value but can be a bit bright with certain material or equipment. I suspect it's especially noticeable coming from Quad.

What is in the rest of the chain?

The rest of my chain consists ofAcousTech phono-preamp, the CD player is a Meridian 508. On the top floor of my house, there is a painting studio where I have a whole different system, consisting of Spendor 100SPs, Rega 25 LP player with Leymann Black Cube phono stage, and VTL tiny triods with a Reference Line passive preamp. Personally, I feel this setup is more musical than the Monitor Audios, which seems more 'analytical'. I might try switching the Pathos amp. with VTL's and the passive preamp and see what the difference will be.

Let me know how the VTL works with the RS, I bet that could help.

Have you ever compared your AcousTech to the Lehmann? If so, can you comment on the difference?

What a big difference!!!!! The VTL tiny triodes with the Reference Line passive preamp are the perfect match for these Monitor speakers. They bring the highs down to a more natural high, yet these speakers still maintain their vivid detail. So, I will conclude, Monitor Audio Silver RS6's must have tube amps to maintain their full potential. Oh, one more thing, I don't think they need subwoofers.

I have a pair of older Monitor Audio S1's and they sound crystal clear but the highs on some material are as you described. They need proper cabling that leans to the warmer side along with electronics that do the same.

Mr. P, Whats new?

Are you willing to re-consider the speakers? Two brands that come to mind would be Harbeth and Spendor. Both lines wonderfully musical.

I already have the Spendor 100 SLs in my studio, which I agree, they are very musical, but soon I will have to downsize and they too must go. The reason I sold the Quad ESL's for the Monitors is for their small footprint and easy placement. But, after hooking them up to the VTLs, they too are astonishingly good.

The 100 SLs are great. The new smaller foot print Spendor D7s sound terrific. Spendor also just rolling out the D9s just a tad bigger.

BTW, I used to have Spendor SP-1s.
