According to the Dutch audio website hifi.nl Thiel Audio closed its doors. Any information to share here?

Anybody who ever liked Thiel speakers think the company was the same after Jim Thiel died in 2009?

No. Bought out, moved from Kentucky to Nashville, all new design different than the “coherent source” principle.

The 3.7s were excellent speakers. I had a pair and loved them. One of my favorites. I think they were the end of Thiel.

I first heard the Thiel’s at Ears Nova in Roslyn NY years ago. The model was the 2.? (something). If I had to guess they were the 2.3’s. I would put them right up there with the Alison or Snell’s of that era. Because I never heard the name and I was an audio snob back then, I stayed with my Bose 901’s. The Thiel’s were reasonably priced and I should have bought them. Another regrettable missed audio opportunity.

After Jim’s passing I heard them at an audio show. They were tipped up in frequency response and sounded nothing like the ‘accepted’ frequency response of the day. I was dissapointed. Apparently Jim was one of the very few designers who really knew how to build a credible loudspeaker. Sorry there was no ‘John Grado’ around to continue his legacy.

It died with Jim, unfortunately. I was a friend of Tom and I go way back. I live in the same town as Thiel audio and it just so happens, I have started a new speaker company, my second speaker company (first was 25 years ago). Where is the appropriate place on this forum to announce this ?

thank you,

stumpy
