The $49 miracle phono stage

Rob,

Thanks so much for this review. I moved my CS-5000 to my listening room a week ago to compare the Ortofon HOMC to the V15III/SAS. It seemed much easier than swapping carts. (Interestingly the Ortofon also benefits nicely from the same cap plugs I made for the Shure.) I'm thinking the CS-5000 might stay since I hardly listen in the living room. This little phono stage may just be the ticket until to hold me over until I build a Bottlehead or buy something else.

Who would bet against Rob being able to build a pretty good system for under $1000?

...not me...

Ill Take that bet

Direct from Polk with warranty speakers - $375

Yamaha Natural sound Receiver - $349
Amazon.com: Yamaha R-S500BL Natural Sound Stereo Receiver (Black): Electronics

ATLP120 Turntable - $239 (includes AT95E MM Cart)
Amazon.com: Buying Choices: Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB Direct-Drive Professional Turntable (USB & Analog)

That's $963 ..crap...Okay ...Add $129 (total 1092) and you get a cool CD player too...
Amazon.com: TEAC CD-P650 CD and USB Recorder with Remote (Black): Electronics

I splurged a bit on the speakers for the $1000 system because I know you can throw anything at them ...LOL

So if you want to blow away a college student or a friend...you can do so for a tad over 1K and have a killer starter system....

Lol!!!!! That's awesome!! I'd like to hear that system.
Anyway Rob I'm real Interested in this battery power.
It's not the first time I've heard of people running phono stage on battery power
It makes sense to me. Clean power.

One of these will run this phone stage continuously for at least 333 hours, probably twice that. :)

The two 9 volts is straight DC power (so no noise possible)
The 15v power supply is an AC power supply 120vac that converts to 15vac +/- switching which is less desirable. The ART uses the same scheme in that it could run on 12vdc or 9vac +/- If you measured the ART wall wart, you would see it measures +4.5 AC and -4.5 AC switching

Yes, it outputs to the AUX line level on your amp....

Truly, if you want a kit this is a good one...But we are doing independent tests, Bugle VS ARt on DC power.

Thanks for the reply. I will most likely get that one. Comes out to around $50 with parts.

John.

Well, I've decided to get one of these while figuring out how or if I should get a tube phono pre-amp. (I'll be connecting it to one of the Tape inputs on my Onkyo. The AUX is reserved for the magical Squeezebox Touch). I'll keep my TCC TC-750LC as a spare. The whole reason I'm getting a Phono pre-amp even though my Onkyo TX-SR705 has a Phono stage is two-fold. 1) The phono stage on the Onkyo is not discrete, it is shared so it's a safe assumption that it's problematic at best. 2) The darn cables from the Denon TT won't reach the Onkyo anyway. I hear that running the ART from DC current makes it even better, but I have no place to put a bunch of batteries and there is no way in hell I'm opening up the unit to connect the wires from the batteries and I am not taping them on either. My question: Is there perhaps at least a rechargeable DC power unit that is appropriate for the ART and connects in the traditional way like the A/C adaptor or what have you, I'm looking for Plug-N-Play? If so, where do I get one? ~Eric

Mike,

...The unit is the standard RIAA 47k equalization however; you and I know sometimes you need lower on certain carts...this part throws me a bit because I know if you want to do this directly into a receiver phono stage, you can use Y-cables and resistor plugs to lower ...I am just not sure if you would do the same in the ART (Turntable to Y cable , one end to the ART, other to resistor plugs)...Would the ART force the 47k or would it work the same?

Hmmm....:P

It would work the same with the ART or any standard 47K imput impedance preamp. :)
