Technics Stereo Power Amplifier SE-R1 .....

I hadn't realized until I read a blip in The Absolute Sound that the Technics SE-R1 power amp ($18,000.00) is Class D. It uses a linear power supply rather than a switch mode power supply to produce 100 watts per channel.

That's even worse. Didn't know either Dan.

It appears to be nothing more than an upgraded version of the amp section from their Panasonic SA-XR receiver series from the mid-2000's. They were also rated at 100wpc and sold for around $500. I have one boxed up in the attic if anyone wants to hear what one sounds like. If pushed hard or used with non 8 ohm speakers they ran hot and fried themselves. In a reasonable sized room with efficient 5.1 monitors set-ups they did sound pretty good.

Speechless.

Kind of like a $300 DJ oriented TT is now worth $4000. It wasn't, contrary to the opinions on another vintage based forum, that great of a TT to start with and even with improvements not worth the money they are asking. In their prime the TT's from Denon, Sony and JVC and Yamaha were better sounding. They are just trying to get their name back out. Denon did the same thing a couple of years ago with their Anniversary offerings.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Nothing wrong with getting your name out, and getting back into the game. However, do it with value for the dollar, not just rebadging something with a bigger price tag.

So back to the DD 1200 TT that coincides with this amplifier launch, there must be a pre-amp with a phono stage too?

I'm thinking of building a complete vintage Denon system for the office. Maybe I can find a good DP TT from somewhere instead?

An end game to the whole 1200 TT re-issue could be to sell the motors to other manufacturers that want to use more exotic arms and base materials. That would help recoup the R&D invested in the motor upgrade. The arm was always the weak point and the plinth purpose built.

Agree 100%
Think they could've tried marketing to younger vinyl buyers who want to emulate being an old-school dj.
Lots of interest in the second hand 1200/1210 market in the $500 to $800 range.

Along with the Technics SE-R1 Class D amplifier they also introduced the SU-R1 Network Audio Control Player preamp and new SB-R1 Reference Speaker. Technics calls this system the R1 Reference System.

Ouch... I've always remembered Technics HiFi to be in the cheaper budget category. Is this the new cheap HiFi floor level?
