Helped set son up with new system: Hegel H80 integrated, Dynaudio Focus 260. He is now using a Play Station for all input- streaming, CD, Blu Ray, connected to TV and Hegel as simple 2.1 HT. A desire is to play Spotify through the system.
I want to give him a simple way to manage audio- play music files. He has no technical skills. I am thinking an OPPO 103 using an ext HD of music files plugged into it. It has an adequate iPad controller and displays on the TV as well.
Apple AirPlay (Express) perhaps, which means pc/iTunes as controller. Music would need to be reformatted to Apple lossless (beyond him, I suspect but I can do it).

Thoughts; alternatives?

I don't think AirPlay/express will stream lossless. If he has a router with dlna / USB input and connects a hard drive then the play station will access and play those files wirelessly if on the same network. Oppo is a good idea too. Key to ease of use is what app someone can use on iPad or iPhone to browse library and control player. A used squeezebox is pretty user friendly that way.

From what I've heard a used Squeezebox may cost more than a new Oppo.

PlayStation will play music files (according to web) but not hi rez or lossless beyond WAV.

Seems odd to buy a BluRay player bought solely to play music files off a HD, but I don't see as convenient a solution below its cost ($500).

Use an Apple TV or airport express. Super user friendly and streams Apple lossless. Highly recommended for the techno challenged.

Only undesirable there is having pc as part of audio system. After files are converted from FLAC, it is cheap and simple- so that may be our answer.

A plug-and-play (wired) piece of equipment for digital files where you select the song by touching a name on a list (iPad, phone). Seems like this would be a popular new source and there would be a wide choice of product available from the main stream mfgs (Pioneer, etc.) offered at $250+. D/L music is popular, so people are using digital files. Why not, you think? Already incorporated in other equipment and the stand alone market is small? A Chinese mfg could whip one of these together with off the shelf parts overnight and cheap.
