Suggestions for a good CD transport?

Were you aware that until a few years ago, there were only a handful of companies making high end SACD/CD transports? Sony, Esoteric, and another company whose name I forget. All high end transports were sourced from them. These days, there is only Esoteric, and Esoteric has stopped third party sales of transports. This is why companies like Playback Designs have stopped offering SACD players and have turned into a DAC company - because their transport supply has dried up. DCS has a stock of Esoteric transports, but they only move a handful of their high end Vivaldi transports anyway. As for MSB, they use a modified Oppo and are quite open about this.

In short - all transports right now, with the exception of Esoteric, are mass market low end transports. If you want a superb transport, look for a secondhand transport based on the Sony ES mechanism, or a transport based on Esoteric (e.g. Playback Designs, DCS), or get a new Esoteric.

Note that I am only talking about the disc spinning mechanism and laser assembly itself. The bit that slides in and out might make the transport look proprietary, but the underlying mechanism/laser is still a mass market transport. Neither am I referring to the electronics that looks at the data after it is read. Some, like the Memory Player (not sure if it's still around) reads until it is perfect, buffers it in memory, reclocks it, and sends it. I believe the PS Audio Perfectwave transport uses a low end disc spinning mechanism (low end compared to Esoteric), but it is the electronics that make it special.

Keith - thank you. Great explanation. I was aware that, for the most part, only Esoteric and perhaps Oppo and maybe one or two others were still making SACD transports.

PS Audio is using a modified Oppo. Do you have any thoughts on the electronics in the new PS Audio transport?

The new PS Audio Memory player is also a choice. Why not give Paul a call at PS Audio, if he's in the guy loves to chat.

I have one coming in, so I will get to try it in that system. Was just curious to see what else was out there. I've always fancied NAIM and Esoteric for their transport capabilities. EMM is another good one.

The CH D1 also uses an esoteric drive. Guessing that the bought a bunch of them from esoteric before they stopped selling to other manufacturers.

Would love to hear the Memory Player. Mike are going to stock or have in your demo rooms PS audio gear ?

Mike,

First of all, as others have noted, SONY prohibited manufacturers to output digital SACD signal. Those transports that do (Accuphase, dCS etc) all use proprietary interfaces in their closed systems.

For this reason alone, getting an SACD transport to be used with third-party DAC makes absolutely no sense.

As for redbook CD transports, you need to decide if you want a brand new unit or an used one.

If you decide to get the former, there are only a handful manufacturers left that still make them.

Transports from C.E.C. or Esoteric would be my first choice, depending on your budget.

I don't like the Esoteric sound but the transport itself is very good when plugged in with SPDIF to an external dac. Also the old TEAC transport modded can be good and cheap - Lukasz is used to do those things in his early days before the Lampi went big.

The dCS downsamples SACD to PCM while transporting to a 3rd party dac.

The Oppo has a mode available, that can output SACD to a 3rd party dac - one has to put a card in. Flyer on WBF knows the details.

My mac air beat an oppo as a transport though.

Agree here on those--but I've owned the TL0-- and it is finicky with CD-Rs ,if you intend to play those--I sold mine as I have 46 CD-Rs( and the so-called "elite" TaioYudens) and the CEC played what it liked only--blah!

Same problem with the Sondek CD12 I had--can't comment on the Esoteric but my NAIM plays all and sundry without wimper!--glory be for PRAT!:hey:

According to reports there is a new kid on the Block making waves--

JMF 3.7 CD/SACD/Bluray/Pure Audio Transport

Any suggestions for a good CD transport? I would love one that did SACD too, but I'm not aware of any non-proprietary interfaces to allow SACD.

I have my eye on the NAIM CDX-2 as one option.

Any other suggestions?

Mike-Have you tried the PS Audio transport? It plays both CDs and SACDs and outputs the DSD stream to their own DACs. I reviewed the DSJ and it's a great sounding DAC.

I have mine coming soon and I totally agree about the DSJ. I have the DS.

The TL0 is a 20 year old design. Many CDPs made in the 90s have problems with CD-Rs and CD-RWs. It has been replaced by TL-0X and recently TL-0 3.0.

Mike.......A McIntosh MCT450 transport and their MD150 DAC connect with a proprietary cable that allows the transport to output DSD to the DAC.
