Hi all

im currently using a 2009 Mac mini which runs Audirvana + where all files are upsampled to DSD128. The Mac is starting to show its age but can't knock it as it's served me well.

im potentially looking at getting a streamer, are there any out there that upsamples all files to DSD128, all my files are stored on a dedicated NAS, I don't need the streamer to have a Dac built in as I use a Lampizator Atlantic in DSD mode.

If nothing ticks the boxes for me I suppose an alternative would be to get a later model Mac?

Any advice much appreciated

Lee

Lee - The Lumin U1 does what you want. PM me if you want to discuss further.

Re: Streamers - PCM > DSD

Interesting does the A10 or the N10 or is it a limitation in their software unlike the Lumin U1 which does upsample

Only the Lumin allows upsampling from anything to anything. Aurender does DSD to PCM conversion.

another suggestion:
Sonic Transporter

https://www.smallgreencomputer.com/products/sonictransporter
https://www.smallgreencomputer.com/collections/audio-server/products/sonictransporter-i5

Allows you to use several different software solutions for network playback.

They will also make custom verisions with an i7 versions or versions for extremely large libraries if you ask. Ask them about what they can do for your setup.
You can also use this with an inexpensve little computer like a Cubox or the Sonicorbiter SE.

right now I have the SGM (Sound Galleries Music) Server in-room to try with my Lampizator SE Golden Gate. my GG does Quad (256) dsd so that is what is input from the SGM. it's even better with dsd 512, but also good with dsd 128.

it's a step beyond any other streamer since it incorporates HQ Player optimization and Roon so up-samples PCM to the highest dsd rate of your dac and sounds amazing. 'bit-perfect' streamers like the Aurender or Lumin are not in this league. HQ Player is the difference maker. and it's open architecture will allow for continual upgrades.

personally I was not a Tidal user, but this SGM I'm using has a Tidal subscription and so I'm also listening to that too, and it sounds very good and is seamless to use.

I owned the ($56k) Trinity dac last year that set my reference for my PCM; this is clearly better than that using my quad dsd GG......which is quite astounding when you think about it.

Mike,

I agree with your assessment of the SGM server. Ed Hsu visited a few months back. We tried the SGM on a number of DACs here (T+A DAC8, Playback Designs MPS5, Phasure NOS1a, Chord Dave, Meridian Ultra) and the performance with HQPlayer was stellar with all of them. I ended up purchasing the SGM before Ed left.

As you mentioned, the integration of Roon/Tidal is seamless and a major advantage beyond its sonic performance. It's also a workhorse and built like a tank. I haven't had any mechanical issues since its purchase.

The only DAC we're still trying to get to work with the SGM is my Pacific Microsonics (PM2). The driver for the Berkeley Alpha USB interface has some quirks that have made it difficult to install on the SGM so far.

Edward has been diligently trying to get the driver to work and has other options we're exploring that Ed feels will work.

In the end, the PM2 is still the best PCM DAC I've heard in my system even without the SGM. And I've also owned the wonderful Trinity DAC. Can't wait to try the SGM on the PM2 when Ed visits again next month.

An SGM home audition is highly recommended.
