Hi Steve,

I remember you saying that you get 8K-10K hours from your tubes in the MC2301's. What do you use to test your tubes?

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

I don't know anything about this but Dan "Double-D" and some others over at another site use the MaxiMatcher 2 and MaxiPreamp 2 to test their tubes.

Joe.......I use the MaxiMatcher II and the Maxi-Preamp II tube testers. Both are simple to use, they test a wide variety of power tubes and small tubes, and are well built and reliable. The MaxiMatcher II is $699.00 and the MaxiPreamp II is $989.00. If you own tube preamps and/or power amp you need to be able to test your tubes.

If I remember correctly, I believe Steve purchased the Amplitrex AT1000 tube tester. I don't know if he is still using it or not.

Joe...I use an Amplitrex AT1000. It a killer machine, well built and I love it. Does them all. Lots of sockets and adapters. Huge database. http://amplitrex.com/

When I'm in the mood, I hook it up to a PC via its USB to graph and print results. The software user interface is a little clunky by today's standard but it works nicely.

A good tube tester is a must have if you have tube driven HiFi equipment. I generally test twice a year given that I have a hybrid 2-ch / Home Theatre setup. The HT side of things clocks the hours up on the MC2301s especially. The proof is in the hours and I have pushed the hours. The MC2301s + Genalex Gold Lion KT88 Re-issues (Russia) are a strong, solid and reliable combination.

Amplitrex AT1000 at work testing Gold Lion KT88 and Telefunken ECC801S tubes pulled from 3 x McIntosh MC2301 tube amplifiers. Weak tubes were replaced and quads were re-matched according to test results.

Sometimes when you get an unusually hot result on an ageing tube, it pays to perform another reheat and test with the autobias setting off. Although this tube tested strong on the first test at approx >8,000 hours, it was unstable and has since went super-nova.

Oh.... And the Amplitrex AT1000 lets you plug in headphones so that you can listen to the tubes to hear if they are noisy or microphonic.

It's nice to share the love. Lol.

Thank you so much Steve. That's the one that I wanted. Once I put my ART monos back in rotation, I'll make a decision on getting a tube tester.

My JBL 4367 love being driven by tubes so I am rethinking what to finally put on them. The KT120's in my ART monos need be changed by 3K hours and I need to be more careful with the tubes.

Very interested thread guys. Was reading about the Maximatcher II any concern that its plate voltage dont go higher than 400v? I've read that some amps drive their tubes at 600v.

Also does anybody have experience with the Orange VT1000 it seems to offer a lot of features for a reasonable price
