Sonus Faber Lilium

Doesn't appear that the woofer is close enough to the ground plane to be considered slot loaded. Even if it was, it wouldn't be a bad thing if properly designed...it can be a good way to add low end bass response without adding more size to the enclosure.

The bass driver appears to be at the top of the speaker, under an angled sheet of glass. I was wondering if that driver was slot loaded.

Viewing from my phone, it appeared to be the bottom. That is odd to put it at the top of the speaker and not use boundary reinforcement. It appears that they are using some sort of slot loading. Crossed low enough, there is nothing wrong with that at all.

If I remember correctly there is a downward firing driver on the bottom and a passive driver at the top. Not 100% sure. I actually paid more attention to the Extrema's.

Lilium

I'm fortunate to home audition the Lilium. Definitely a step up from the amati futura in scale and clarity. I find the mid bass a bit lean though, which was never the case with any previous Sonus faber which normally tend to some warmth in the mid bass/lower mid area. Overall, I find them on the bright side, with the tweeter calling attention to itself. This is a brand new unit, with about 30 hours playing time. Is this leanness in the mid bass and brightness a break in issue or has Sonus faber finally moved away from the classic Sonus sound that is still very evident in the warmer sounding Futura?

I've had a short demo of the Lilium. Enough to tell me that they are not for me and the gear I own. Given where I am at and the type of application solution, the Dali Epicon 8 is a better fit.

The Lilium is supposed to be in a different category of loudspeaker given the price point, filling a gap between the Stradivari & Aida. (I choose the Strads as the baseline). I reckon though, if you were to AB the Lilium with the Dali Epicon 8 driven by the same equipment, the Epicon 8 would prove to be a better fit for most.

Mike...given that you have owned the Strads and now have the Dali Epicon 8, what are your comparative thoughts and which do you like better?

I've owned the Strad and now have the futura. One thing neither speaker can achieve is pressurize my 550sq/ft room the way the Lilium does with ease. if the tweeter softens with time, this has the potential to be a great sounding speaker.

Steve - the Epicon 8's with the NuVista 800 is no less musically enjoyable than the Strads/Pass XS gear which costs many multiples more.

BUT - this does not mean the Epicon/800 system is as good as the Strads/XS. Everyone who has heard both systems say "I thought the Epicon 8/NuVista 800 system was amazing, but the Strads/XS are on another level."

Keep in mind I've owned the Aida's and the Strads are a better speaker IMO and one of the reasons I returned to the Strads after a temporary diversion which included the Aida's.

The old man was a f'ing genius. Franco was passionate and made speakers which delivered music in the same manner. He built speakers with soul.

I have heard the new Lillium and it was very nice. I guess the young guy is learning! I actually thought the Lillium sounded better than the Aida's despite costing less. YMMV.

Mike...if I were given a choice between Lilium and Stradivari, I would choose the Strads.
Application wise, a perfect match with McIntosh MC2301s also....

I love everything about the Strads except the footprint from a practical placement standpoint. Aesthetically however, they are a work of art.

Others would argue that Aida requires care with application and placement to excel.

I sometimes think about putting a pair of Strads or Ktemas aside for a future system...

As for Dali Epicon, probably more versatile especially in multi -ch setups.

I agree Steve, but the Dali's are a better speaker than many costing double or more and paired with the NuVista, so so enjoyable.
