Sonos’ nightmare was inevitable

I am not a tech person at all and surprised/relieved when my laptop or streaming music works.

If Sonos speakers came out in 2006 did the developers think we would be doing the streaming, WIFI connecting and other recent changes to this field. It seems there is only so much obsolescence prevention you can have put in older equipment.

Windows 7 came out in 2009 and is virtually useless with no support from MicroSoft as there is not enough capability to run more complex programs.

I'm sure, if I owned Sonos products I would be disappointed also.

I think everyone is overreacting about Sonos. They have had the most stable and reliable track record of probably any company to date. I could see having a legacy network in addition to a new Sonos network to keep the old gear separate from the new for new features. As long as the stuff keeps working, I’m happy. I have a ton of Apple computers that were deliberately cut off from new operating system upgrades and updates. That cr@p was truly expensive and no response to do that. If anyone should suffer consumer wrath, it’s Apple. Even their phones stop getting iOS updates. C’mon, really? Maybe it’s dumb to invest too much in “smart” products.

I would agree with you. Everyone I know including myself that own Apple products complain about them but go ahead and buy another one.

I purchased the basic Sonos Play 1 stereo smart speaker system for our bathroom just a few months ago. I stream Qobuz and Tidal through it. I hope it doesn't become obsolete in the near future. It sounds great and is just the right size to sit on the sink. What alternatives are there that are similarly priced? On Amazon, perhaps Denon or Audio Pro? Hopefully Sonos will continue with their smart speaker line.

I find it amazing that you hear people whining about Win 7 support shutting down, this Sonos thing. But not a word about Apple which was significantly more expensive for people to upgrade to get the latest Kool-Aid.
In this day and age it is ridiculous to think that your software driven products are going to keep going on and on and expect companies to keep updating legacy products. If you have a 7 year lifespan on this stuff, you're doing well.

Agree.

With the free windows 10 upgrade from previous versions of the os, I’m ecstatic. This breathed new life into older computers and and gave me an immediate boost to all my computers, old and new. Nice!

The problem with this whole scenario is that these upgrades that Sonos is currently deploying are worthless. At least to me.

This is contrast to the real improvements Apple has deployed to its phones. An iPhone 5 hardly even resembles the latest incarnation.

The Sonos system already streams every service I care to use. RoomTune works great. What else has Sonos really added lately? Voice control? Meh.

What upgrades is Sonos planning that will obsolete their current hardware? They have been totally silent on this front. I am a beta tester and would be the first to know what’s in the wings. Total silence.

I am just guessing that with all of the new capabilities that Sonos has added over the years older products “may” not have sufficient memory for all updates. This might be the reason they are saying they will continue to function but will not continue to receive future updates.

Probably right Jim. The good news is that I can use all of them as DLNA renderers irrespective of what Sonos does or doesn’t do with their firmware. I’ve already seen this with the CR-200 which does not have all the functionality of their iOS controller.

I hope so. As a beta tester I got a survey last week asking my opinion on the current upgrade/obsolescence issues. They are obviously getting major blowback.
