Smart TV as audio player? Anyone?

I am setting up a simple audio system in my garage. Basically it's a vintage audio receiver plus an USB hard disk with my whole MP3 collection.

Now I need a player to hook the HD to and then plug it to the receiver in a way that I can browse my entire collection in a big screen, then choose the album I want to listen and just play it. I don't want to use a computer for this (not even a Raspberry one).

So I had this crazy idea of just hang a smart TV in the wall right above the receiver and use it as a player. I hooked the HD with the songs on my Samsung 40" LED TV to see if the USB would feed it with enough power and it worked fine. I just didn't plug the TV to a stereo but I believe that the quality should be fine (I am not an audiophile, just enjoy music).

Anyway, I would like to know if someone else has tried this solution and what are the impressions?

:P

PS: My second option would be a portable DVD player (one of these which have a swivel 9" screen attached).

Thanks!

A friend of mine did something similar. He bought a new 4K TV and had a fairly old receiver. The new TV has an optical output. But the receiver only had a digital coax input.

So he bought a switch box from Amazon that converts digital optical to digital coax. He put the switch box between the TV and the receiver. He connected the TV to the switch box with an optical cable and the receiver to the box with a coaxial cable.

He can now listen to whatever plays on the TV via his receiver. In his case, he had a 5.1 receiver. So he now listens in surround sound.
