I like what I have read about the luxman da-06 dac. The simaudio DAC's, the 280d and 380d also get good reviews. Yet, somehow, I cannot wrap my head around the luxman brand when it comes to a digital dac. I love it's looks, and reviews like its sound, but it has high jitter in the graphs in spdif inputs...not so with usb. Simaudio seems to be well grounded in the digital arena, but can the 280d dac at $2200 compare to a luxman at $5000....or is the cost irrelevant and simaudio is just better at digital? Can anyone give me any input/experiences on the simaudio 280d? Most appreciated!

I own the Luxman and have had the PSA DSD, Cary Audio 200T, Marantz NA11s1, Chord Hugo, W4S DSDse with Femto upgrade in my system and have heard the T & A DAC 8, Auralic Vega, Bricasti, Bryston and a couple of Lampizators to name a few. I can't say that the Luxman is the best of the lot but it sounds as the major reviews by Stereophile and Audiostream portray it. What it gives up in ultimate detail and resolution it makes up in its warm, romantic sound and lush midrange. It does sound best with usb. If I had to do it over again, I would get the PSA DSD (or the T + A) because of the ability to tailor the sound with its multiple software versions.

If you want an great sounding DAC, the T + A is awesome but really needs to be run at 512 DSD through a program like HQ Player. IMHO, it sounds better than the PSA at that resolution. However, you need a good computer with a fast I7 and 16gb ram.

The Luxman sounds great with HQ player but I use a program called Bug Head Infinity Blade which also requires a high end I7. I run a dedicated music laptop with a 6700HQ I7 cpu, 16gb ram and 5TB HD.

By the way, the Marantz was a stunner in my system. It had the most realistic sounding piano, vocals and texture but it was too forward in my system and the bass was overpowering.

Sorry for being long winded. Just throwing some info out there.
